FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review 2/19/2008...
Pours like natural root beer - very well-carbonated. Head is thin and fades quickly.
Smell is powerful - caught whiff from eye level even when pouring. Carbonation makes the aroma travel well - good, sarasparilla (sic?) and coriander tones w/Belgian yeast; malt or hop tones are extremely subtle.
Nice molasses backbone with deep caramelized profile and additional yeast and underlying spice tones.
Heavy carbonation at outset makes this much lighter than expected, but still has that nice coating feeling.
Could drink more of this than expected; alcohol is there but hidden well.
horto008 (21), Alabama, USA Jul 4, 2009 Now my favorite beer. 12oz bottle courtesy of new Alabama beer laws! Aftertaste is what is remarkable -- has a spicy finish that is truly unique compared to all beers I have ever found. Sweet but not overdone. Bitter but not too bitter. To me it had a marked fruitiness instead of the coffee/molasses/smokey taste found in many strong ales. Luckily, I bought 6 of these! DeanF (285), Paris, France Jul 1, 2009 Lots of great aromas, malts, some fruitiness, barley, and so on. Tastes great, goes down easy, with little alcohol coming through in the flavour. DrZao (96), Houston, Texas, USA Jun 28, 2009 Bottle. Pours deep brown black with moderate brown head. Aroma is molasses, raisins, prunes, maybe dark cherries. Flavor is rich and sweet with molasses and dark fruits but not at all overpowering or cloying. Touch of effervescence in slightly chewy palate. Pleasant sweet aftertaste with a touch of bitterness. Overall, a superb Belgian style. As with all of the Unibroue I have tried, it is superb. ljay6880 (132), , Pennsylvania, USA Jun 28, 2009 12 oz bottle poured into a clear pint glass. Pours a darker brown shade, but not black, with about two fingers of thick beige head. Nose is Belgian yeast, alcohol, and something lightly sweet, perhaps sour apple. Taste is Belgian yeast, sweet fruit, and a slight tart/sour characteristic. I was surprised at the carbonation in this one, almost a champagne spritz. Not special in any category, but definitely an enjoyable brew. Listigovers (96), Ontario, Canada Jun 26, 2009 A dark almost purple beer. Very thick and sweet, roasted malt and plums. A very savoury beer to keep you warm in the cold Canadian winters! kazooka (39), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA Jun 25, 2009 Aromas of dried cranberries, yeast, plum, and fig. Pours a dark amber, with off-white head; yeast flecks in suspension. Medium sweet, lightly sour, and lightly bitter flavors. Thick feel, medium bodied, lightly carbonated. Sweet and sour finish leaves one wanting more. Hoptagon (132), Arlington, Virginia, USA Jun 25, 2009 750ml cork in cage that has been sitting in my cellar for just over a year. Fizzy pour with spritzy light brown bubbles that actually laced pretty well. Appearance is like dark molassas with a bit of brown at the edges. Impressive aroma with tons of raisin, a bit of yeast and some vanilla notes. Flavor is similar, but with more dark candied fruits. Plums, figs, raisins and dark cherries are all present with a bit of caramel. Palate is plush, overly ripe and smooth. Definitely has a vintage character to it. Finish is dry and slightly tart. Really well done and by far my favorite offering from Unibroue.
