Had basically the same pleasant reaction to both. Very dark beer with a plethora of flavors. since they are as expensive as the rochefort or orval, etc offerings i would suggest them over this beer. This beer poured a medium to dark brown with a tan head that was of decent depth, maybe two fingers worth. It had the aroma of sweet dark fruits and maybe a bit of toffee. It tasted great, I had started a bottle before my meal, a "Zinc Burger" at Redcoat Tavern in Royal Oak, MI, and it was great, a decent amount of sweetness and a bit fruit - much like the aroma. After having had the burger, I would say that it certainly doesn’t pair well with guyere cheese and caramalized onions. The second beer I had was at a bar, and once again I tasted those slightly sweet fruity notes. A great beer! walrussell (105), , Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 22, 2009 I like the slight roasty bitterness combined with the belgian flavor. Also - the sweetness is there, but well balanced. Could have thicker mouthfeel, maybe? Great light brown head. Definitely my favorite from unibroue so far, and I have yet to try a unibroue I don’t like. larryLSB (141), La Selva Beach, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 17, 2009 Poured from 12 oz. with large tannish head that quickly dissipated. Stron nose of fruit, mainly figs, and a hint of candy. Kind of a sharp taste, maybe mint. very dry to the finish. Overall a good beer, but a little overpriced for a 4 pack. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 16, 2009 Medium to dark brown, tall, frothy head, slowly creeping down. Brune malt aroma, Belgian yeast, earth. Relatively sweet flavor, malty. Caramel, fruit, alcohol. Chocolate. Sweet malty finish balanced with lots of alcohol heat, port. Ok Belgian Abbey-style brune, but nothing really great. Better than the sweet types, as this is not cloying at all, but better than average. Relatively rich and flavorful. xs2500 (90), Mississippi, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | May 13, 2009 Starts with a nice thick head, with a wonderfully sweet malty aroma. Taste is complex, but leaves the mouth happy to say the least. This is a great brew everyone should try noncaloric (605), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 12, 2009 Pours a deep hazy brown, amber highlights showing through. Chunky sediment, exuberant beige head, well retained, abundant lace. Aroma is breath full of bubblegum and yeast. Bubblegum flavor, the alcohol coming off as a bit of peppermint fire, some fruit flavors, mostly orange and plum, against a lightly caramelized malt background. Medium to full body, soft sudsy mouthfeel. This is a complex, tasty beer. I like it. It misses a certain je ne sais quois that leaves it short of excellence, but I still like it. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 11, 2009 341 mL Bottle. Deep brown body with a fizzy beige head that dissipates to a wispy ring. Aroma is sweet malt, syrup, hints of chocolate and toffee, and an alcohol note that is more wine-like than boozy. Sweet malt, rich dark malts, and toffee predominate with a warming alcohol expression in the aftertaste; almost like a chocolate liqueur but smoother. A hint of toffee and a tartness linger in the finish. A strange but interesting brew.
