Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2004 Aroma of chocolate malts (sweet and roasted), fruity and raisins. Superb! Cloudy brown coloured with an offwhite, lasting head. The taste of this beer is superb again; chocolate malts, sweet roasted, fruity and honey. Very well balanced. Lingering and very smooth palate, perhaps a little bit alcoholic (the only small minus of this brew). Overall a great beer.
Rerate june 2004. Now I had this one for the second time, I'm less enthousiastic as the first time (4.8). Still great but lacking complexness. Balance remains.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2012 Pretty dark appearance, hazy, off-white head. Pretty complex: chocolate malty aroma and flavour, some sugar, alcohol, roasted malts, dried fruit and raisins. Lingering alcoholic finish. In the style of Chimay Bleu. Very nice brew, can only get better with aging. Re-rate: Bottled, 10 years old. Still some lacing after all these years. Very aged nose, port-like, raisins, malts. Initiailly sweet, but later on bittersweet flavor, aged but still balanced. Relatively thin mouthfeel. Lasting bittersweet finish. Just a little bit past its peak at 10 years i think, but i can’t deny that aging has an interesting effect on this beer. Next time let’s try a 5 year old one...

Hazy brown color, off-white medium creamy head. Aroma is chocolat, malty, slight alcohol sharpness, fruity also, raisin. Taste of roasted malts, chocolat, raisin. Slight alcohol burn, long lingering palate. Expectations were high, but this beer could match up with them!

Pours a completely opaque, fizzy brown. The nose is fascinating- muscato (peachy Italian desert wine), banana, brown sugar, vanilla, watermelon schnapps, maybe strawberry? The flavors are no less complex with bitter cocoa, anise, orange liqueur, nectarine, plum, sweet ripe apple, mango, and loads of exotic floral spice (cardamon, mace, etc.) Dry on the palate (but sticky on the lips) succulent fruity finish, spice, alcohol, and earthy bitterness. Mind-boggling!

Bottle pours similar in appearance to a fizzy prune juice with a rapidly dissipating brownish head. The aroma is of fruit and malt syrup. The flavor is quite mellow resembling a Port, but more subdued. As things warm up a bit, I also identify a sweet milk chocolate. The 9% ABV is not noticeable through the flavor - only though the sensations experienced by the observer. The palate is rich, but the carbonation cleans the palate nicely. Yes, this is pretty good.

Darker than i expected, but i apparently did not read the commercial description; nice fruity sweetness in the nose, equalled in taste. A tad fizzy. Very drinkable.

Some coffee in the nose, but other than that, some bready hoppiness. Very fizzy palate. Not as complex as I was expecting - it seems a pretty straightforward beer.

Burnt caramel aroma with plum and berries.Opaque and cloudy darkest brown with large tan head that diminished slowly with marginal lacing. Flavours are a celebration in the mouth sugar sweet malty caramel, orange, spice, berries and a lasting sensation of liquid chocolate with just a little tartness catching the edges of the tongue to contrast. Mouthfeel is velvet-smooth and quite thick and rich. This is a perfect dessert drink or something to be savoured as an evening drink. I've been saving this bottle and just popped it open to celebrate the completion of my first all-grain brew session. It was the perfect choices and I can feel my spirits awakening. Bottle.

UPDATED: FEB 28, 2004 very faint aroma; very dark brown color with a thick tan head; flavor much like an abbey tripel (rerated 2/28/2004: aroma much more distinct - sweet malt predominates; the flavor could be rated 9 except for being slightly too sweet with just a little too much alcohol coming through)
