4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2004 Spicy, heady aroma, estery and malty, with prominent red grape and banana notes, dark brown sugar sweetness, plum, clove and faint citrus. Deep, opaque mahogany with burgundy highlights and a lasting, creamy, ivory colored head. Initially tart and bittersweet, becoming more fruity and malty with a lightly alcoholic, acidic, spicy, yeasty finish. Smooth, creamy and lightly fiery mouthfeel. Interesting convergence of styles. Very satisfying, makes a splendid nightcap or dessert, especially on those cooler nights.

Fruit and yeast in the nose, the aroma is rolling all over the table. Big malty flavors and a sucker punch of a 9% that both S. and I supposed as a 6 or 7. Some fig and cheese flavors. May be the best Unibroue.

Of the Unibourne I have had this my third favorite. A bit less dynamic than Maudite, but also asmoother presentation. I like it alot.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: APR 28, 2004 Exceptional beer. Dark fruit,
vanilla, chocolate and caramel notes. And yet with all this complexity, its remarkable quaffable.
Update with no change in rating: One of the new and fresh bottles arriving locally wasn't at all the same as my earlier sampling. This one came out exceptionally attenuated. Sweet and fruitier flavors are masked by a definite and unwanted alcohol presence. The body was surprisingly thin. The sample would barely warrant a 3 rating, but I'm leaving my original until I can verify what's what.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A distinctive beer in a rather impressive line up from Unibrou. A bit of a progenator as far as style goes. Outside of Belgium we can call it Belgian-like. Made inside Belgium this would be an artisinal classic.

I have to say I think this is the best beer that Unibroue makes. What a rich malty and fruity flavor, much nicer than La Fin. Deep and rich, a nice beer to relax to at the end of the day.
