There is still ample carbonation. Aroma, hmmm, smells kind of like a pizza box, which tells me that this may be past its prime. Also smelling some sausage spices, such as oregano and pepper, but I’m not sure how much the pizza box scent is affecting that. Swirling reduces these odd smells, and brings out the port-like character that is posted in the description. Further warming starts to dull this cardboard scent, the aroma has greatly improved, and roasted malt makes its presence known. There’s also just a slight hit of tartness as well. Taste is lightly medicinal, with some dark fruits, caramel, and a finish that is lightly peppery and yeasty. Plum skin is also rather prevalent now in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium, and the carbonation is still quite lively on the tongue. The cardboard-like aroma really threw me off in this beer, and it definitely seems to be past its prime. I’ll have to re-rate a fresher sample again. Although it does not taste very dark, it brings a rich, full flavor of dark beer that is not too harsh. It has a fine look and long-lasting distinguished taste.
Everything from this brewery is a hit. If you want to try a lighter brew, try their La Fin Du Monde. oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA

Pours a nice dark reddish amber color. Aromas of fruit, and some other hints, maybe some spices, maybe caramel. Flavor is a bittersweet, malty, and a hint of hops with a nice bittersweet finish. joeyplush (333), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 29, 2008 Pours a dark, cola color with an off-white, heavily carbonated head that disappears rather quickly. Aroma is rich, sweet, and fruity, with hints of grapes, plums, and cherries. The taste is full, with fruit flavors as well as caramel malt and spices. Palate is fizzy, with a slightly sticky finish and alcohol warmth. An excellent beer with its own unique character. lowg (123), Scarborough, Ontario, Canada

Figured the autumn months is best time to have this one. Poured into my Chimay glass; brown with a thin tan head. Aroma a grape/raisin, with some spices, malt and alcohol. Flavour of dark fruits and spice - mostly nutmeg and clove, with some yeast in there as well. Finishes very smooth. brew4fun (168), West Virginia, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2008 Pours dark cloudy brown, thin tan head. Aroma is woody, earthy, a bit sweet. Flavor is a backdrop of roasted malt, with pleasant symphony of cinnamon, licorice, orange, dark fruits, mild alcohol. Medium body with low carbonation. Rich without being overpowering, a very interesting (in a very good way) brew. MatSciGuy (630), Rosemount, Minnesota, USA
