Rune (2748), Tromsø, Norway Oct 2, 2008 100ml from bottle at EBF 08. Off-white head over an unclear, dark brown-reddish body. Aroma of dried fruits. Taste of dark fruits, black currant supported by a more tart edge to the ending. Bitter dry in the mouth. Full bodied.
HonkeyBra (1266), Lemont, Illinois, USA Sep 28, 2008 Pours a very dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is yeasty, with banana and other fruits, spice. Flavor is complex, gets better as it warms, lots of fruits from plums to cherries. Good mouthfeel, but this isn’t a 4, you understand? trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 25, 2008 I was very surprised by how much I liked this one, as I remembered most of Unibroue’s brews to be unrefined versions of Belgian styles. While I still think it’s true to some extent, this one came much closer. Pours a very dark, slightly reddish brown - nearly black - with a quickly dissipating head (seriously, the thing disappeared). The aroma is right on - reminiscent of some fantastic Belgian quad... though slightly less potent, and with more sour cherry. Notes of dark fruits and baking spices prevail. The flavor is trying so hard to be the Rochefort 10, but just doesn’t live up. It’s a little more watery, and the flavor doesn’t linger as long as I’d like. Still - that’s not to say it isn’t good - this is a great attempt at one of the best styles in the world. KnutAlbert (3108), Oslo, Norway Sep 23, 2008 Bottle from Gammel Strand, Copenhagen. I’ve looked for this for quite some time.
Hazy dark brown, lively carbonation. An explotion of taste. Lots of fruit, sweet and sour, well balanced sipping beer. Apricots, plums, sour cherry. Dry finish exposing the hops. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Sep 20, 2008 Poured from bomber, fourth leg of a Belgian style beer tasting. Color is murky prune-brown with a cream head. Aroma is spicy, of coriander, clove, fruit, banana, and yeast. Flavor is rich with banana and other fermented fruits. To be honest, it is tough to pipoint, but the trademark Unibroue Belgian take is there. . . Finishes smoth, with some vanilla and apricot fruit. Really nice, but I just can’t get into Unibroue’s blend of flavors. Gout de fuit exotique avec malt et sucre,. exquicorp (7), USA does not count Sep 18, 2008 Nice deep colour, very rich and powerful nose with deep plums and dates dominating...a heavy malt dosage.
Taste is very malty and dark fruit with moderate carbonation.
This really is one of my favorites ESPECIALLY at the price point. It’s a heck of a value.
This is NOT a session beer.
