Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

Only way this rates higher then westmalle is lower expectation, given its not a true belgian. (In my opinion) overly carbonated from bottle pour and no, bottles were not poured at room temp, have about a second before getting it into glass. Only time I’ve had issues like that were in cases where Brett was being used as well. Suspect more sucrose then belgian candij syrup as to the dry finish and lack of head, along with more cocao then dark fruit.bit of spice and bread flavor but lacks in mouthfeel.too light, too dry.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2015 Pours dark brown. Fruity notes. Belgian ale flavors with very subtle sweet fruit aftertaste. Great!

Pours clear amber-brown with two fingers of light tan head, excellent retention, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is dark vinous fruit, brown sugar, some Belgian yeast. (9/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (9/10) Full body, moderate carbonation, off dry and mildly boozy finish. (4/5) Nicely integrated and mellowed but a couple years’ cellaring. (Should pick up a couple more of these and put them down for longer, to see how they’ll change.) A very well-behaved and nicely-balanced strong dark. Nice beer for a cold winter’s afternoon, having just cleared the snow from the driveway! (16/20)

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a big but quickly dissipating creamy beige head that leaves little lace. Aroma of alcohol, leather, yeast and sweet red wine. Flavors of clove, coriander, dark red grapes, yeast. Light body, lightly bitter, bitter to sour finish, average carbo.

750ml cork bottle poured into a duvel glass around 12 degrees. Poured a deep mohagany, almost black robe, showing a faint ruby hue and good carbonation. You get about a finger and a half of lacy tanned head that fades pretty fast to an uneven porous layer. The nose is complex with bananas, raisins, plums, cherries, nuts, dark bread and alcohol. The taste is representative of what you get in the nose, paired with a good density and wonderful finish. You can put this beer in your cellar up to 8 years to let it evolve into an even more fruity and nutty ale. Cheers!

Aroma: Smells like commercially made bread in the US (think Wonderbread). Is this a Belgian thing? Appearance: Deep, dark amber, almost black colored beer. More carbonation than expected. Lacy, two finger head that disappeared quickly. Taste: Raspberry, honey, brown sugar, raisins, cherries, fruit, and yeast. A bit of alcohol, Metalic front end and finish. Palate: Metalic front end that dissipates immediately into a surprisingly clean, airy, light, crisp, and carbonated feel in your mouth. Overall: I poured this 12 oz. bottle into a glass I like to drink beer in. I am not a Belgian beer fan but grabbed this and Chimay Blue from one of my local craft beer spots. This beer reminded me very much of the Chimay, but it’s weaker cousin. RateBeer member dnicolaescu summed it best, "What it is lacking is more spice and heat from the alcohol."...but a solid beer nonetheless. It’s my second favorite Belgian dark ale...but again, it’s still a Belgian beer. #respectbeerbrethren

Bottled date? I’m not going to look it up on their site. Aroma, light, cookie with a hint of raspberry? Long tasting day. Happy New Year! Beautiful appearance. Frothy light brown (Huge) head that lasts forever. Fair lacing, slightly hazy with a brown, almost purple colour.. Sweet initial flavour and fsirly long gingerbread like finish.light palate with an almost creamy texture. Fizzy and hides the 9 percent alcohol fairly well. Wow petow, c’est bon en ta! This will be one of my go to beers from now on.

Couleur brune foncé au reflet rougeatres. Aromes complexes de caramel, épices, fruits rouges, céréales, levure belge. Bon pour le style mais c’est pas mon genre de bière... Sur évalué pour moi...
