naivepegasus (183), USA Jun 16, 2008 Pours nearly pitch-black-ruby with a few fingers of head with a soapy head that lingers. Strong odor of plum, malt, and caramel. Strong plum and sugar malt taste which ends with a warm alcohol aftertaste. A good, complex quad. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jun 15, 2008 Updated: Aug 19, 2008Bottle: A very well crafted Belgian ale. Dark in color with an intense off-white head. This heavily carbonated brew is sweet and sugary with dark fruits and malts. It has a hint of yeast in the aroma and flavor. The alcohol is well hidden and it is extremely drinkable. A great all around Belgian Strong Ale. UPDATE: With the last few experiences of this beer, my opinion has steadily dropped. The aroma and flavor was overpowered by a soapy yeast smell and taste. Over carbonated and not as flavorful as I remembered. I hope to try it a few more times and see if my thoughts change. daniele (1644), Italy Jun 15, 2008 scura bella schiuma mediamente persistente note molto fruttate malto tostato in bocca tendente al dolce note di porto il fruttat dopo un po si perde l’etilico si sente leggermente all’inizio data la gradazione ci puo stare ChainGangGuy (2523), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 15, 2008 Appearance: Pours a rather dark, reddish-brown body with a foamy, off-white head.
Smell: Spicy, sweet-smelling aroma of rum-soaked spice cake, orange zest, random berries, and dark caramel malts.
Taste: Sweet, sugary dark malts with well-blended tastes of caramel, milk chocolate, and vanilla. Punchy, tangy fruit character throughout. Mild bitterness. Dash of white pepper. Very, very slight sour hint. Touch of alcohol near the end. Fruity, fizzy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Moderate carbonation.
Drinkability: Very tasty. I’d been quite some time, years in fact, since I’d last had one of these. I oughta be ashamed of myself. ysusi (10), Mexico, Mexico Jun 14, 2008 Lots of aromas coming out from the bottle since you open it. Very dark colored with red brights when seen to the light. Thick head that vanishes into a persistent thin layer. Tastes like roasted malt, some dark fruits but not sweet. Some alcohol, but still smooth. More carbonation than needed, but nothing serious. Nice aftertaste persists for a while. A good one. sleestak (180), Williamston, Michigan, USA Jun 11, 2008 Ruddy brown with a substantial, but short-lived head. Aroma dominated by dried fruits and yeast. Taste profile has boatloads of raisin, cane sugar, and roasted malt. Lingering alcohol burn, but nothing suggesting the huge ABV. thejon375 (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 9, 2008 What a brewery!!!! High alcohol but does not taste or smell like it. Great full body flavor excelent composition of malt and fruit flavor. Would recommend this to anyone. hoppopotamus (182), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jun 8, 2008 OK, the cork must have been bad on mine. Almost no head at all, and very undercarbonated. Either that or the yeast didn’t take the priming sugar.
Dark brown with no head. Aroma is dark fruit (dates and figs and raisins), some apple, and roast malt. Flavor is molasses, with burnt notes, a hint of alcohol warmth at the finish.
Too bad this slipped through quality control or I might have rated it quite highly! Will have to taste it again, given the previous rave reviews. I think I will write a strongly worded email to their American distributor and try to get myself a freebie.
