Commercial Description:
Strong Belgian type ale similar to a Port wine ! Is as dark as can be, mellow in taste with an aroma of ripe fruits. It can be compared to an old porto and is brewed from well roasted malt.

Bottle from Utobeer. What was left in the bottle poured a murky brown colour with frothy tan head. Aroma is of dark fruits, malty, toffee, some spices. Taste is liquorice, chewy, creamy and full bodied. Nice effort but not one of the best.

That classic Unibroue pour and aroma. Pours near black with a medium beige frothy head. The usually Unibroue sweet grain aroma but with extra sweet and lots of licorice. Very fragrant. The flavor is like drinking very airy bubbly black licorice. Some orange and coriander as well. Pretty sweet and very rich finish. The malt is roasted to perfection. A slight woody finish. Not the most well crafted brew, but it is delicious.

While this is a great beer, it does not match up with others of it’s class. For a darker beer it has a surprisingly warm feel but is lacking in complexity. I would recommend a St. Bernardus Abt 12 and other Trappist ales over this beer. While this beer does have a high alch content (9%) St. Bernardus (10%) has a higher content as well as others so this should not enter into the equation.

Nice dark ale! First had on tap. A little sweet at first, but pleasant aroma and aftertaste. Higher alcohol content not noticeable in flavor. Smooth drinking and will definitely drink again.

The ideal winter ale for me...rich, malty, subtly spicy, nice caramel, and that touch of Belgian yeastiness. The finish is long, smooth, and warming, and the body is velvety, and slightly creamy. Yum!

Not 100% on board with the trois pistoles craze, but a good beer nonetheless....

I tried this beer on January 17, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto. I’ve been trying to get a hold of this for a while but it has been rather elusive. The beer poured a dark brown, with a thick creamy tan coloured head that lingered a few minutes. The aroma was sweet malt, some yeast, some dark fruit, and some spices. The mouthfeel was creamy, full-bodied, with high carbonation. The flavour was malty, sweet, yeasty...with a little licorice.

Malty start with pears and cinnamon. Sweet. Pours dark with a small, quickly diminishing head, good lacing. Aroma is yeasty and appetizing. Full-bodied, mild lingering after taste. Very good.
