cfrancis (293), Gloucester, Ontario, Canada Sep 6, 2009 Sweet beer. Aroma is a stinging fruit that is sharp to the nostrils. Taste is fruit with an alcohol taste that isn’t a burning sensation with a lot of Quebec strong beers. Instead it’s a smooth bite of malt and alcohol. Such a nice beer to sit back sip and relax. petematte46 (213), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 3, 2009 Pours an incredible purple/maroon color with a bubbly white/rose head. Strong flower nose with a bitter finish. Not bad
angryrobot (13), Australia Sep 3, 2009 very dark almost black, ruby highlights, light average surviving head . aroma of banana , roastiness, raisins. tastes of yeast, fruit; not managing to hide some alcohol. trayns (237), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA Sep 2, 2009 Bottle. Pours a very deep brown and large beige head. There is a mild sweetness and yeast to the nose. The flavor is most surprising - there is a lack of sweetness for the color. A nice bitterness of the yeast and spicy fruity notes. Surprising, and enjoyalble. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 30, 2009 A 12oz bottle...
The head starts out tall like a cooking pot soaking in soap bubbles, but dies down. Deep, dark brown. Dark rose-black in the light. Thick and mega-cloudy; opaque.
The smell is thick and grainy like a dark barleywine. Hints of dark grape. Heavy alcohol and port wine aroma. Almost like a red wine in the nose.
The taste is lots of port wine and grainy sour malt flavors. Puckery and tart. Heavy alcohol finish. Dark stone fruits; grape and plum. Belgian spices at the end when it warms up.
The feel is smooth and buttery but a little thick. Not at all gritty. Milky but smooth. It’s like a sour, ripe barleywine or strong ale. Tremendous to nurse for a long time. Great. JK54B (913), Helsinki, Finland Aug 30, 2009 A bottle tasted at Silja Line. Beige fast disappearing head. Mild syropy nose. Dark brown reddish colour (Cola). Slightly sweet syropy taste. After adding the sediment hazyness. MIld hops. LtDan (471), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA Aug 29, 2009 Appearance: Pours a midnight maroon with a fluffy head that subsides to a white ring.
Aroma: Unripe strawberries, sour grapes, fruity Belgian yeast, and brown sugar.
Taste: Sweet red grape, plum skin, clove and spicy hop.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and fizzy.
Overall: Another solid, tasty and strong beer from Unibroue. v64 (74), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 26, 2009 Light, nutty aroma, moderate head. Tastes very dark fruity and nutty. The alcohol is masked so well in this one, I would never guess it was 9%. Very smooth, perfect level of carbonation. Can’t ask for much more in a beer.
