bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Aug 5, 2009 750 ml bottle in tulip. Dark brown color with nice large off white head and semi-hazy. he aroma is fantastic with a huge burst of fruit and floral aromas and very intense, a lot of dried apricots and raisins. The beer is very sweet with a good amount of yeasty flavors that bring out the dried apricot and grapes (almost a similar sweetness as a mead). The finish was a long sweet melting blueberry. Overall a very interesting and delicious beer, but hard to drink a lot of it due to the sweetness. Davros (202), Australia Aug 4, 2009 Updated: Aug 5, 2009Gusher. Dark copper pour, lots of yeast floating round. Good head, nice persistence. Would have liked some lacing though.
Aroma is lovely, with the Unibroue yeast, plums, prunes, blackberries, candi sugar, caramel, nougat, red wine and sweet sherry. Very perfumy/rose-like.
Taste shows more of that classic yeast, lots of residual sweetness (candi sugar, I guess). Esters are reminiscent of lighter fruit than the aroma, namely pear and white grapes (more akin to a tripel!). Some alcohol, but reasonably well masked.
Not as full a body as you’d expect, but it works well the the lighter flavours. Not too much carbonation (unlike a lot of the Unibroue beers). Very slight warming on the palate. Quite enjoyable.
This seems to have a less dominant yeast character (than the other Unibroue beers), I’m pretty sure that’s why I’ve rated it so much higher. Bejaaamin (110), London, Ontario, Canada Jul 30, 2009 deep black, hint of red at edges. Nose; tangy citrus, nutmeg, cloves, eucalyptus, sweet. Mouth; herbal, a little too sweet, good, but not amazing. alagnak (302), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jul 29, 2009 Draft @ the yadhouse in Rancho Cucamonga. Much darker than I was expecting, nose is delicious stone fruit, raisins and figs, taste is more of the same, very balanced sweetness/bite/spicy/alcohol. The alcohol, while clearly present, is well blended into the flavors. Really nice. Elwood (677), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Jul 28, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with a very effervescent tan head. The nose is a dusty vinousness with notes of yeast, raisin, and a musty sweetness. High carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel. The alcohol is warming on the first sip. Ripe, dusty fruits, raisin, plum, spice, and light vinous notes on the palate. Medium-short finish. Overall an excellent Belgian worth seeking out. thorongil2 (54), , Ontario, Canada Jul 25, 2009 (bottle) very dark amber brown colour; aroma of malts, caramel, dried fruits, smoked prunes, alcohol; taste of caramel, alcohol, malts, dried fruits. elgiacomo (64), Ringgold, Georgia, USA Jul 24, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours brown with a small off-white head that lasts well down the glass. Nice lacing, although not sticky. Aroma is big on fruits. Flavor is very fruity, apple, apricot, grapes, pear, also yeasty, with some caramel malt. Very nice. Mouthfeel is rich and smooth, low carbonation. A wonderful Belgian-style ale, my favorite of the Unibroue line! USCBeerMan (103), Columbia, South Carolina, USA Jul 24, 2009 Dark ruby brown color pour with a dense frothy foam head. Aroma is fruity and wine-like with hints of dark cherry and spice. Balanced, but has a thin nature to the overall presentation. aroma is pleasing and appropriate. smooth finish that weakens as the beer is consumed.
