Beer Snob (360), Ontario, Canada Mar 26, 2004 Updated: Feb 25, 2006 This is a masterpiece and a dangerous beer at the same time. Ridiculously mellow for a 9% beer. Malty, dark and delicious.
RERATED: A beauty of an ale - dark, mysterious and emitting a spicy/fruit aroma that really whets the appetite. Very tasty, reminiscent of a sweet red wine. But wheras nobody with any taste likes their wine sweet, it works nicely in this context.
Some points are lost for the too heavy carbonation. But make no mistake, this is a really good brew, and its heavy alcohol content sneaks up very nicely.
Narnad (182), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Jan 7, 2009 Pours a very dark brown with some reddish notes in the light. A frothy white head forms when poured and has a medium carbonation level. The aroma reminds me of a very strong red wine, lots of fruit notes, some cherry and plum, mixed with some caramel malt tones. Flavor has a lot of dark plum and cherry notes, some spicy flavors, sweet caramel malt appears to be there as well but it’s not overwhelmingly present. The light mouth feel really emphasizes the alcohol present in this beer. Overall a great beer from a great brewery. ironchefscott (309), long beach, California, USA Jan 7, 2009 12oz bottle and actually really fucking nice great cherry taste and malty nose with the usual belgian yeast nose....wish I had more! Poured into a Corsendonk Christmas Ale glass a very nice cloudy reddish brown color, nice carbonation, a very quick fizzy tannish head, not much sticky lacing on this one. The nose is very nice though, malty, lots of figs, plums, raisins, with some yeast and spices. The taste is malty, with some nice yeast notes, the dark fruits kick-in very nicely, with some spicyness. Medium body. Very drinkable, this brew has got to be close to maybe 8 years old, not sure when Unibroue produced this one, but it is already close to 5 years beyond the expiration date. Still very tasty. I have a few more bottles left, YEAH
pjweaver (125), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 4, 2009 Tulip Glass from bottle. Thin white head resting on top of its deep walnut color. Sweet fermented red fruit flavor matching its sweet aroma. Great beer, with a crisp foamy mouth feel. pojo41 (314), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA Jan 3, 2009 Deep dark brown pour with a nice fluffy off-white head. Wonderful malty aroma with hints of fruit. Flavor is dark and malty with fruit and wine tastes galore.Extremely easy drinking for a beer of 9%. Outstanding
