We couldn’t stand the idea of going nine months without our Winter Warmer, so we decided to hold some in reserve. Bourbon Barrel Winter Warmer is aged in three-year-old Buffalo Trace barrels to add hints of oak and bourbon to our Winter Warmer’s already complex taste. After aging our 2008 World Beer Cup Silver Award-winning Winter Warmer in bourbon barrels for six month, Bourbon Barrel Warmer will be released in 22oz bottles in late April.

22 ounce bottle, bottled in December 2013. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown with an inch tan head light tan head that stays around for a while. There’s also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like bourbon, vanilla, molasses, and dark fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s the addition of some caramel, nuts, brown sugar, bready malt and a bit of booze. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s a bit slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall I liked this brew, and it’s certainly worth a try at $6.99 a bomber.

Bottle; Pour is murky / muddy brown with two finger, fine bubbled khaki head - it retains well, with sticky lacing present. Not being a big fan of the base beer, I wasn’t too excited about this one ; however, perhaps I received a christmas miracle because this bottle was fantastic. The age on this bottle and the barrel treatment smoothed out the imperfections (in my opinion) of the source - the nose is caramel and toffee, with dominant fruit - cherry pits and sugar plum here. The flavor profile on this one is modest barrel treatment, but the fruit notes come through fairly heavily, yet they blend together wonderfully with the malt notes of caramel ,toffee, and brown sugar. Theres a hint of earth, vanilla, modest bourbon - impressed.

22oz bottle courtesy of gyberic. Unsure of the vintage, maybe 2011? Aroma is a nice blend of brown sugar, toffee, bourbon soaked figs, raisins, a nice kick of bourbon. Pours light brown with very red hues in the light. There is some head retention, but eventually settles out to the sides of the glass. Taste is extremely well balanced with initial toffee and butter, toasted oak, vanilla, caramel, heavy malt, toasted bread, and then the kiss of dark fruits, mostly raisin and dates. There is a nice spicy kick in there, but it is not a boozy spice, and there is very light astringency. The bourbon is pretty mellowed out at this point, I think, and integrates nicely with the fruits and heavy malt. The finish is smooth, great thick body, creamy finish that is not overly sweet or hoppy as some barley wines tend to be. Wish I knew what vintage it was!

Big thanks to Chris for sharing this one. Served in a tulip. Pours a medium brown-caramel color with a few bubbles on top. Nose has smooth bourbon. Flavor is fairly smooth as well, but a bit hot. Touch of spice. Medium body. Some oak and vanilla.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective barrel-aged beer tasting on 08/11/2012. Clear amber pour with a thin white head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Citrus, malt and oak in the nose. Medium to full body with notes of citrus, bourbon, malt and a bit of floral hops flavors. The finish is malty with an oak aftertaste. Decent aged Barley Wine overall.
