4.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 EithCubes (4198) - New Jersey, USA - FEB 28, 2011
Bottle from the most recent batch. Corked and beautifully caged. Well, this gusher ejaculated over my face, clothes, and half the kitchen, Wonderful. On the plus side, I got about a pint out of it and it’s a good one. Dark chestnut/hazelnut pout with a short tan/light brown head. Smells of malt and massive sour/tart acidity, spicy with cherry and plums but still that nice rich malt nose. Taste is very sour and burns, heavy lactic and medium acetic/balsamic, has some nice rounded Fl Red edges and even a little spice. Mouth puckers at the sharp sourness, there’s some caramel and toffee lingering under the thick, thick cherries and lighter plums and grapes. Chocolate malt undertones. Mouthfeel is much thicker than a lot of sours, sort of a robust fullness, malty sheets, woody and dry but with lingering sourness. Complex and rewards larger volume. I don’t know what to say, I wasn’t expecting a lot out of the first attempts to make this kind of wild beer, and after the second release of the lambics, there was room for concern. But this one knocks it out of the park, absolutely world-class and among the top two or three American sours of this type that have been commercially released. Go go space dragon!

Served from a 750 mL bottle thanks to awiseman01. The Feb 2010 version. The appearance is a cloudy cider brown with a good dirty white head. Tons of earthy barnyard tones in the salivating nose. Hints of bourbon, oak, and butterscotch as well. The flavors are woody/grainy sour flavors with some sweet edge to balance things nicely. Brown sugar, herbal leaves and weeds. Fantastic beer for sure. Big thanks to Andy for this one!

A: Pours a dark chestnut with a nice cream-colored head. Good lacing as it goes down and quite a bit of sediment, even in the first pour from the bottle.
S: Sweet and tart dark cherries. Some caramelized malt, dark candi sugar, figs, dates, and some nice sour notes. The sourness is definitely not overpowering, but increases as it warms up, and I believe will become more prominent as it ages a bit.
T: Very similar to the nose with a nice lactic character developing throughout. The combination of the typical Belgian dark flavors alongside the sour notes is very nice.
M: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation and a nice level of sourness--certainly not bracing, but its presence is easily detectable.
D: Very nice all around and quite unique--I wish there were more (or at least I were aware of more) beers around like this. Much better as it warms up and I think this will age really well.
Also, the label’s artwork is awesome.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 MissouriBrent (122) - Missouri, USA - JUL 19, 2011
Bottle gushed when opened. Smells sour with dark fruit aromas. Hints of caramel and cherry. Dark brown with nice tan head. Lots of small chunks of yeast that quickly settle to the bottom of the glass. The flavor is sour with lots of sweet malt in the background. Some pleasant flavors that remind me of sweet lemon iced tea. All in all though, this beer’s flavor is most like a oud bruin or flanders red. Very drinkable and very well done. Sour but not dry, sweet but not too sweet. Damn good beer.

LCBS 2010. A reddish pour, off white head. Aroma is fruity and funky...not overly sour in the nose. Some light yeasty notes creep in and some vanilla as well. Flavor isnt too sour, not sweet either. Some interesting funky flavors, maybe some tart grape flavor, and some vanilla notes again. I liked this.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Sean9689. pours a cloudy and opaque dark brown with a small creamy beige head. Overripe dark fruits in the nose, very tart and barnyardish. Medium body, very tart with and underlying plum-like sweetness Lactic acid - acetobacter? Definitely woody, red wine character. Ends dry and very tart - but never overdone, actually in perfect balance. A wonderful and close to style Flemish Red. 290311
