Thursday hallmarked our first bottling of another type of long aged oak beer with a variety of microorganisms in play . The beer is still hard for any of us to really define, it’s really one of a kind. At 8.5% ABV, it would probably be most akin to a strong Flander’s Brown. A spice blend was involved as well as some dark Belgian Candi Sugar during the kettle boil. That part we controlled. The rest was up to Brettanomyces, Lactic Acid Bacteria, and whatever else decided to visit the fermentation as we left each barrel open to air for an intentional short period of time. As to the name, he’s a demon, we named the beer after a demon. Space Dragon was too grade school.

Served from a 750 mL bottle thanks to awiseman01. The Feb 2010 version. The appearance is a cloudy cider brown with a good dirty white head. Tons of earthy barnyard tones in the salivating nose. Hints of bourbon, oak, and butterscotch as well. The flavors are woody/grainy sour flavors with some sweet edge to balance things nicely. Brown sugar, herbal leaves and weeds. Fantastic beer for sure. Big thanks to Andy for this one!

Dark red pour from 22oz bottle from trade. Very sweet and wine like taste, dry finish. Dried cherries and sweet fruity happiness. Not bad. Just getting into sours and this isn’t my favorite but it is enjoyable.

750mL bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown body over a massive tan head that showed no sign of depletion. Sticky clumps of lacing on the glass. Sour vinegar nose. The flavor is unexpected: more sour yeast, subtle spices like cinnamon & nutmeg, sour apples, and finished with an indescribable herbal note. Soft carbonation and medium body. Interesting brew to say the least. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle in a teku. Pours dark brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of sourness, chocolate and darker malts, some light oak, hints of spices and dark fruits. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Average texture. A pretty good dark sour.

750 ml bottle to snifter (2014 vintage; shared with the Mrs.). Looks good; a slightly translucent dark brown cola with foamy light beige head. Smells mildly tart and oaky ith a semi-sweet full Flanders brown backbone. Tastes like it smells with a pleasantly fuller-bodied mouthfeel for the style. A bit of the self-described candied sugar as well. Good beer.

750 ml bottle, not sure what the exact age of it is but I picked it up as part of Upland’s recent sour release a couple weekends ago. Served in a Prairie Teku, the beer pours very dark brown with some reddish tints. There’s about an inch tan head that stayed around a long time, and a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like tart cherries, oak, red grapes, sweet spices and some vinegar. It tastes like tart dark fruit, vinegar, oak, blackberries, earthy spices, and a bit of brown sugar. It’s a tasty, tart and fruity brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s smooth and has a good amount of soft carbonation. I thought this was good, glad I got to try this one!

Flavor is wild fruit, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries. Finish is tart, oldish, tea and mint. Light to medium body, weak carbonation.

Sampled at 2011 RBWG. Pours cloudy maroon with a thin head. The nose is dark fruits, vinegar, light funk. The taste is much the same – reminds me of Cuvee de Tomme. Medium motuhfeel. Tasty. 4.0

750mL bottle, pours a murky dark mahogany / borne with a beige head. Nose is authentically sour brown, with tart dark fruits, Worcestershire sauce, earthiness and some yeast. Flavour is interesting - it’s a very wild version of a sour brown. Notes of dry tart dark fruits, wild yeast, and some earth. Not sure how I feel about this one. It’s very earthy and wild, with no residual sweetness. Interesting stuff, but not overly enjoyable.
