Capa (1942) - Manama, BAHRAIN - DEC 20, 2012
Copper with a finger of head. Aroma is fruity hops, pine, caramel malts. Medium bodied. Flavor has a nice pine and bright citrus fruit profile with sweet malty undertones. A bit bitter and sticky sweet on the finish. Good DIPA.

22 ounce bottle
At $5.99 a bomber in the local market this is a reasonably priced fallback beer. While the profile is nothing special (and there are better options from Three Floydís, Stone, and others) it does not feel like a gimmick. Grab a fresh bottle and find out for yourself what Upland does when not making sour beers.

Aroma / Appearance - The semi-transparent base sits by and eats up a quarter of the light. Clear legs race downwards like sheets of rain on a windshield. Carbonation is evident without being overdone. Roses, sweet hops, lemons, and grapefruit remind me of a summer garden in full bloom.

Flavor / Palate - The bright rosy hops get your attention almost immediately. The bitterness that follows is rather tame for an imperial IPA. Regardless it finishes with a memorable tang that hangs in the back of the throat. While not an exemplar it is good enough that I would recommend picking one up if you are in the area.

tastybeer (1607) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - DEC 1, 2012
UPDATED: DEC 25, 2013 Bottle. Deeper gold pour, off-white head. Little retention/lace. Aroma of pine, citrus, caramel, resin, booze. Taste is moderately bitter, pine, citrus, big caramel malt sweetness, booze. Palate is soft, oily, bitter/sweet finish. Good when fresh.

brystmar (1112) - Dallas, Texas, USA - NOV 29, 2012
Fresh bottle from the brewpub. Big blast of piney hops in the nose, not as rounded and smooth as is found in good DIPAs though. Unbridled hops attack your tongue as you sip with no malt backbone to balance things out. No citrus to speak of. Upland should stick to sours.

Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber with about a finger of creamy off-white head. Nose involves mango and pineapple, sweet grain, wildflowers, honey, some hearty dough, and perfume notes. Taste is super sweet with a fair bitterness and a touch of tartness. Medium bodied, syrupy, fairly clean with a nice bitter finish. A good beer, but for me too sweet with not enough oomph from the aromatics. Fairly inexpensive at $5.50 for a bomber though, so thatís a plus. Like the Dragonfly, very malt forward and sweet as IPAs go.

22 oz bottle pours a clear red/orange color with small off white head but good lacing. Smells of alcohol, caramel, bread and citrus hops. Aroma is pretty much the same, but not hoppy enough for my tastes in an IIPA. Tastes sweet with only slight bitterness in the finish. Body is medium without very much carbonation. Mouthfeel is sticky. A well above average beer, but below average for an IIPA, with all the good competition out there. I donít regret trying it but probably wonít come back.

Sample from a 22oz bottle. Clear orange - gold color. Thin off-white / khaki head. Dots of lace. Very light carbonation. Dry texture. Medium body. Light warmth. Very interesting hop aroma. Resiny, some grapefruit, sweet bread, some other hop aroma I canít pinpoint. Bitter taste, with a little alcohol heat but no burn. The aftertaste... Is long, citrusy. Kind of musty with the malts. Interesting DIPA

Well, this beer is structurally compromised, but still enjoyable. Grapefruit, green apple, pineapple all come through, but damn it is mostly alcohol. Not hidden at all! Harsh, but smoother than grain alcohol.

Bottled March, 2011. Served in a Founders snifter. A: Pours a semi hazy amber color. A fluffy white head forms on the pour and sticks around for a bit. Leaves some nice sticky lacing. S: Some sweet caramel, candied sugar, some resin and some pine. Smells slightly boozy. The hops have certainly faded. T: More affirmation of the hops fading. Big malt backbone, slight resin. Some bread and booze. The hops are practically none existent. M: Medium bodied with a nice carbonation, but there are no real discerning flavors left on the palate. O: At this point itís a slightly malty and bread beer with some slight herbal and pine hops at the backend. This bottle wasnít fresh in terms of DIPAís, but it seemed to fall off pretty quickly.
