3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 Rerate - not as bad as I had on NYE. The artificial taste is not there. Must have had a bad bottle.
bomber - pours clear amber/orange with ivory head and decent lacing. nose is floral - not what I was expecting from an IIPA. flavor adds herbal hops, resin and spicy - very vague but that only shows how limited I am in describing flavors. whatever it is, it smells artificial and toxic. mainly bitter, but light a sweetness pervades. 5/4/7/1/6 or 2.3

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber pours clear copper with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, pepper, bread, oranges, and slight hops. Taste is similar to aroma malt forward and sweet finishing with a slight hop bitterness.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in October 2012. Pours lightly hazy bright orange amber color with a nice 2 finger dense off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, orange zest, citrus rind, caramel, pineapple, tangerine, light mango, floral, grass, and earthy hops. Nice aromas with good hop complexity and balance; strength was pretty weak for a DIPA. Taste of grapefruit, pine, orange zest, citrus rind, pineapple, light mango, floral, grass, light caramel, and piney spiciness. Good amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus zest, citrus rind, pine, pineapple, light mango, floral, grass, caramel, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice hop complexity and balance; great malt/bitterness balance as well; with minimal cloying flavors present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy, slick, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this was a very good DIPA. Nice hop complexity and malt balance; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 ounce bottle
At $5.99 a bomber in the local market this is a reasonably priced fallback beer. While the profile is nothing special (and there are better options from Three Floyd’s, Stone, and others) it does not feel like a gimmick. Grab a fresh bottle and find out for yourself what Upland does when not making sour beers.
Aroma / Appearance - The semi-transparent base sits by and eats up a quarter of the light. Clear legs race downwards like sheets of rain on a windshield. Carbonation is evident without being overdone. Roses, sweet hops, lemons, and grapefruit remind me of a summer garden in full bloom.
Flavor / Palate - The bright rosy hops get your attention almost immediately. The bitterness that follows is rather tame for an imperial IPA. Regardless it finishes with a memorable tang that hangs in the back of the throat. While not an exemplar it is good enough that I would recommend picking one up if you are in the area.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Fresh bottle from the brewpub. Big blast of piney hops in the nose, not as rounded and smooth as is found in good DIPAs though. Unbridled hops attack your tongue as you sip with no malt backbone to balance things out. No citrus to speak of. Upland should stick to sours.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber with about a finger of creamy off-white head. Nose involves mango and pineapple, sweet grain, wildflowers, honey, some hearty dough, and perfume notes. Taste is super sweet with a fair bitterness and a touch of tartness. Medium bodied, syrupy, fairly clean with a nice bitter finish. A good beer, but for me too sweet with not enough oomph from the aromatics. Fairly inexpensive at $5.50 for a bomber though, so that’s a plus. Like the Dragonfly, very malt forward and sweet as IPAs go.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bottle pours a clear red/orange color with small off white head but good lacing. Smells of alcohol, caramel, bread and citrus hops. Aroma is pretty much the same, but not hoppy enough for my tastes in an IIPA. Tastes sweet with only slight bitterness in the finish. Body is medium without very much carbonation. Mouthfeel is sticky. A well above average beer, but below average for an IIPA, with all the good competition out there. I don’t regret trying it but probably won’t come back.
