COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Continuing our adventure into the realm of sour ale brewing, we designed a recipe to create an Upland version of a traditional Flanders Red. Melding flaked maize into a turbid mash and adding Belgian candi sugar during a long kettle boil, we prepared this ale for epic proportions. We then incorporated wild yeasts and other acetic and lactic acid producing microorganisms for a year-long oak fermentation in bourbon barrels, which had previously been utilized to age beer. The journey was worth the hardships.

Bottle shared by Seth. Clear brown pour with a fleeting off white head. Sour fruit aromas. Sweet with sour apple notes. Mild tartness and acidity. A very nice sour.

Batch 9-11. Poor is a hazy copper red with Thick sediment and small off white head. aroma is dominated by a musty funk which I hope was not planned. Taste is redeeming with a nicely balanced sweet/tart flavor with an oak and vanilla background, mildly puckering in the finish. Enjoyed this but hard to get over the musty aroma and chunks of sediment present.

Bottle shared amongst friends. This was definitely worth the trade I made for it. Not even in my fridge for more then 5 hrs before I decided to crack it open. I was happy that it wasn’t a sweet sour mess like Duchess, or too vinagary. Solid sour!

Pours deep clear red with a small medium brown head. Nose lends a mild balance of lactic and acetic acidity along with dark caramel malts, vanilla, almost some roasts, cinnamon, and some sweetness. The first taste drops in a good amount of lemon and acetic tartness but is quickly downplayed with dark vanilla and spicy caramel malts like a dessert. Carbonation is more in tune than their other sours and is creamy and medium heavy bodied. Given that this isn’t my favorite style of sour ale it is a little sweet for me. The spices and vanilla character is pleasant but still has a fair bit of tartness in there, just not puckering like some others. i suppose it has to be a little sweet with 10.5 ABV.

Bottle via the release. Pours a deep red/brown color with minimal head. Aroma is Christmas to a certain extent. All spice, cinnamon, anise and some dark fruit. Taste hits on all of these spices and more. Big mouth feel which is nice but not overly sour, could be more so. This one was very nice in a change of pace way for a sour tasting. Would love to open the remaining bottles over Christmas Eve.

Thanks James! Semi hazy copper pour with good offwhite head. Lightly tart faint raspberry nose. Great balanced tart sweet wine quality. Does not seem backsweetened like some of the other upland beers do. Very nice.

Sampled at Yazoo Fortuitous release. Pours a muddy red brown with almost no head. Aroma of sour cherries and belgian esters. Medium bodied with an earthy mouthfeel. Flavor of caramel and candi sugar, countered by notes of cherry. Nicely balanced acetic and lactic finish. This is a very balanced flanders red. I want more

Big thanks to craytonic for sharing this bottle at last night’s tasting. Served in a SAVOR wine glass. Why doesn’t Upland make a specialty glass? For shame. Pours a nice brown-amber color with good red highlights. A nice off-white head and some good lacing on the way down. The nose carries a really nice bit of dark and stone fruits plus some berries. Really a good dosing of fruit in a nice melody. Light bid of malt there as well. There’s a fair amount of acidity there as well. The flavor comes through and really pops. A standard flanders red with a good bit of the bourbon barrel and a heavy fruit component. I was a bit skeptical upon hearing what this one was, but I really enjoyed it. The fruit really stood out to me. Medium body with a slight bit of booze, but not nearly that 10.5% that is listed. Good acidity coming through after a medium body that created a nice malt base. Perhaps my favorite Upland sour to date.

Bottle picked up at the Indy Tasting Room by bsuedekum- thanks again for picking these up, Blake! Pours a hazy amber color with a moderate off-white head. Aroma of caramel and sweet malts, bourbon, vanilla, oak, lemon, cherries, chocolate, and some balsamic. The flavor is a more tart version of the same, with more berries and fresh tart fruits that follow big bourbon barrel sweetness. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, acidic mouthfeel and medium-high carbonation. This appears to be doing better from the bottle than in the FOBAB reviews I’m reading. Not nearly as messy as suggested. I’m still not quite sure I would have given it 2nd place overall but it’s a very good sour.
