This traditional American Pale Ale is a combination of the finest Midwestern malts and American Hops, creating a refreshingly crisp, citrusy, and slightly bitter taste. Named for the Greek sun god, Helios Pale Ale is a great choice for those who like a lot of personality and individuality in their beer. Helios was given its name to reflect Upland’s commitment to environmental sustainability, specifically the installation of ten solar water tube panels on the roof of the brewery, which have dramatically reduced the amount of natural gas used to heat water in the brewhouse.

On tap at brewpub. Pours a clear yellowy golden yellow with an offwhite head, healthy enough. The nose is lightly sweet with hops. Not a ton, floral. Light pale malt. Corn, not a ton of it, but that special corn flake sort of sweetness, unmistakable. The mouthfeel is a bit fuller than I’d expect from the style, with standard draught sort of carbonation. The flavor is in line with the nose, though the corn is perhaps a bit more pronounced. There’s a good deal of sweetness to this. The hops are a bit low in profile for my tastes. This is however really very easy to drink. I’m just sad that the old pale was pushed aside for this pale! That being said, I was very enthused about the new experimental amber, which perhaps fills the void left by the departure of the old pale.

On tap at Upland. Clear, golden amber. Light aroma--not strong enough to overcome the fragrance from my fish tacos. Light/medium carbonation. Not a bold flavor, and it is fairly tame as a pale ale, with a small bite at the end. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home, shared with LeninCat. Thanks to Adam for sending. Hazy dark orange appearance with a thin off white head. Smells a bit stale / dusty. Tangerine / citrus fruits in the nose. Some potpourri / flowers and cookie as well. Kind of doughy / chewy, lightly toasted malts in the flavor. Mild citrus. Moderate bitterness and sweetness. A bit too old but still nothing too special. LeninC@ ticks this 4/5 but I think he’s just especially thirsty for a boost.

Bottle - Aaaand this is what happens when you build a mix-six at the grocery store with two little kids hanging on you--you get a pale ale bottled in July 2013 (!) when it’s mid-March 2014. Ugh. Oh well--here goes. It pours nice, with a big foamy off-white head atop a hazy amber body. Nose is buttery and malty, with toffee, caramel, and sweet breadiness. Taste is the same--buttery toffee, light grassy, lemony hops, dry bread, a bit of mineral and metal, and a watery, lightly grassy finish. Slick and medium-bodied. Not good, but this one didn’t have a chance with the age.

Bottled in November. Mild hop aroma. Pours golden amber with a very little head and almost no lacing. Slight lemon zest flavor with smooth malt character. Not a bad pale ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Slightly spicy, hops, small amounts of citrus. Would hop for more of the citrus hops to come through.

Bottled in November. Amber gold. SMell of rubber and stale malt, minute resin. Flavor is mild, slight pine, slight diacetyl, metal. Just poorly done all-around.

Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy orangish gold. Ample white head that dissipates. Aroma is a light citrus and hop bitter. Taste is a combo of very light malt with light citrus, some grapefruit and orange. Thin mouthfeel, but refreshing.

Sampled at the Brewpub. It poured a golden color with an off-white head. The aroma was hoppy with a citrus/grapefruit note and an underlying pine note. The taste was a bit less complex with a citrus flavor and a bit of a metallic flavor. Not bad.

12oz bottle - pours unfiltered deep gold with white head and good lacing. Nose is lemon water with no zest. Flavor adds grass, wheat and floral hops. Moderately bitter. Every once in a while I pee outside; where are my tax credits for not wasting water? A hoppy wheat beer.

Bottle from fletche00, thanks bro. Poured a crystal clear burnt orange body with large clinging bubbles and a foamy bright white head. Aroma is mostly dry grains with some dusty cereal. Fuller body with large bubbly carbonation. Flavor is super flat with not much going on, notes of dry cereal and super old lifeless citrus rind. Blah.
