COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Komodo Dragonfly Black IPA is a well-balanced, dark, bitter, and totally unique beer experience. We brewed this IPA with a base of fresh Pilsner Malts and darkened the color with pure Black Malts, creating a clean malt character that allows the liberal hop additions to shine through. Komodo is dry hopped and aged with a pinch of lavender to add to the overall aromatic experience.

tmoreau (2782) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - NOV 28, 2013
On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and dispensed to a shaker, showing a deep, black/brown color, with persistent, frothy, brownish tan head foam, and layering, sheet-like, lacing. The aroma was smooth, highly roasted, lightly burnt, with notes of coffee, cocoa & toffee, and a touch of treacle. The taste was dry, a little woody, with earthy & rindy bitterness, and lingering astringency that had some tanniny bite to it. Medium+ bodied, with average to soft carbonation, and a substantial, roasted malt content that was more prevalent than any "IPA" hoppiness, making it more of an aggressively hopped Porter to me. Maybe a bit unbalanced style wise, but still quite flavorful.

Pours brown-black with a very interesting brown head that disappears quickly. Flavor is roasted coffee, harsh and almost burned. Body is too light. Hops feature mostly as citrus in the nose. Not what I look for in a black IPA, but interesting.

Scipio (750) - Palatine, Illinois, USA - NOV 25, 2013
Pours black with with a full, creamy, reddish tan head. It looks great. Aroma has roasted malts, pine, coffee, mild chocolate, and subtle grapefruit. The taste is heavy in pine that is balanced well with a roasted coffee taste. There is some smokiness in here, while I also find some light citrus undertones of grapefruit. Long roasted aftertaste. Medium in body, while having a more thick texture, with a good amount of carbonation. This is a solid beer, especially if you enjoy this style.

FROM NOTES: August 2, 12 A: Heavily roasted presence with citrusy freshness from the leafy hops. A: Pours a non-transparent black with a solid tan colored head that dissipates slowly, leaving lacing clinging to the glass. T: Light flavor of roasted malts followed by pine and citrusy hops. There is a mild burnt bitterness with notes of coffee and cocoa. P: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky O: GOD DAMN, I love American Black Ale! Delicious, well-balanced, beautiful, and fantastic smelling. Definitely drinkable.

Dark black in color, clear with a thin head. Nice Dark malt backing and big hops forward taste. Love the finish and the overall Black IPA concept.

12oz bottle in a shaker. Pours black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy hops, some pale and dark malts, a little lavender, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend of everything. Average texture. A good black IPA, but Im not sure how fresh this bottle was.

Backlog rating year 2010. This bottled beer pours a small tan head with good retention, opaque body, fair amount of lacing, and a dark brown-black hue. The Aroma is malty, coffee, roasty, burnt, and hops. The Taste mimics the Aroma along with a rich taste. The Palate is fairly smooth and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this is a tasty beer, but the downside for me is that it is too roasty and burnt tasting. This beer is worth trying.
