Beautiful pour. Black with a frothy head. Aroma is of roasted malt. Itís taste is a little too dry for me. Not much sweetness but the hops come through at the end.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2012 Beer pours with a frothy yellow head. Appearance is dark black - looks great. Roasty nose, but where are the hops?Tastes of roasted malts. Bitter on the back end. Plenty of bitterness, but hop flavor and aroma remains hidden. Good body, excellent mouthfeel.Overall, good beer but I miss the floral, aromatic hoppiness that I enjoy in an IPA.

Iíve been seeking out Black IPAs (CDAs, IBAs, what the hell ever) and so I found a local one. This was black as night like i wanted, and the malt bill was fairly clean, just a hint of roastiness. The hops werenít big enough, which might just be my busted nose, but I didnít get a big blast of grapefruit or pine like I wanted. This was a nice, easy going beer, sessionable at 6.5% and fairly bitter on the end, but I wanted more oomph I guess. Not bad though.

12oz bottle pours black with darkish tan head that lingered for awhile the aroma of hops and an almost sweet malt. the flavor is pretty much it...the bitterness of the hops and that sweet/roasted malt character blends very well together. really a decent beer.

On tap. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt. Flavor of roasted malt initially with a citrusy, hoppy finish. Great black IPA, I loved both components of a robust ale plus IPA. Uber drinkable too.

On tap at Twenty Tap. Poured opaque black with mocha-tan head. Left good lacing. Hop aroma was there but not overpowering (It smelled like Columbus). Lots of dark, burnt, roasted aromas, but also sweet malt. It kind of reminded me of roasted marshmallows.
If I didnít know any better, I would swear this beer had smoked malt in it. Lots of bitter, smoky roasted flavors coming through.
I guess Iím not a big black IPA fan. From what I can tell, this is a good example of the style, but itís not my cup of tea.

12oz. Bottle: Got in trade from QueenHolly; THANKS Rebekah! Aroma of dark malt, pine, hops, birch, nuts, slight chocolate, slight roast, and slight pine. Poured black in color with a huge, foamy, frothy, brown head that diminished slowly but lasted throughout. Opaque. Sparkling. Flavor is slightly sweet and heavily bitter. Tastes of dark malt, roasting, pine, hops, slight chocolate, light citrus, nuts, and birch. Medium body. Tingly, then lightly dry texture. Average to lively carbonation. Dark malt, roast, hop, pine, light citrus, nut finish is lightly dry.

Great style with beer akin to 3Fís Alpha Klaus. The nose presents hops and a slightly burnt and bitter aroma. The body is midland not too thin not too thick with an initial burst of C hops and nice balance between the roasted malt and bitterness. A great looking beer with brusselís lace providing a thick coat upon my glass. Great beer and great style/

12 ounce bottle, bottled in December 2010 so I know itís not exactly fresh. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch frothy tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. At this point, the aroma seems more like a slightly hoppy porter now, not that itís a bad thing. The brew smells like roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some piney hops. The hops do come out a little more in the taste. It tastes like pine hops, roasted and burnt/charred malt, chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís a bit sticky with moderate carbonation. I think itís a good brew, although I would like to try a fresher bottle of this in the future. Definitely worth trying, I liked it.

bottle. for only being pilsener and black malt i pick up a lot of rounded, chewy dark caramel malt... thereís a roundness and fullness that seems meaty and gelatinous and which i find generally unpleasant, but the milk chocolate (yeast / milk powder note contributing) character is nice. hops are cheesy and pungent in the nose and provide medium buzzing acid and bitterness. lavender is non-existent. decent beer but mostly forgettable.
