COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Komodo Dragonfly Black IPA is a well-balanced, dark, bitter, and totally unique beer experience. We brewed this IPA with a base of fresh Pilsner Malts and darkened the color with pure Black Malts, creating a clean malt character that allows the liberal hop additions to shine through. Komodo is dry hopped and aged with a pinch of lavender to add to the overall aromatic experience.

bottle. for only being pilsener and black malt i pick up a lot of rounded, chewy dark caramel malt... thereís a roundness and fullness that seems meaty and gelatinous and which i find generally unpleasant, but the milk chocolate (yeast / milk powder note contributing) character is nice. hops are cheesy and pungent in the nose and provide medium buzzing acid and bitterness. lavender is non-existent. decent beer but mostly forgettable.

Cant taste the hops in thisone on draft. IT is pure roasted malt, like a super roasted porter.

Bottle. Dark chocolate, anise, and mild astringent alcohol aroma with a hint of lavender. Opaque black color with large tan head. Mildly sweet cocoa malt initially with a strong bitter grapefruit peel finish. Medium body. Pretty good.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2014 12oz bottle, bottled November 2012. Black color. Good thin half-finger brown head. Good lace. Toasty, herbal hop nose. Medium body. Light carbonation. Kinda watery texture. Good roastiness, some light milk chocolate. Herbal, lightly earthy hop. Mostly sweet taste, light bitter aftertaste. Odd Black IPA. Strange watery character, and odd herbal flavor, but still hoppy, chocolatey, and roasty.. Still a black IPA.. just not my favorite example 7/4/6/2/12

Re-rate, 1/12/14: 12oz bottle, bottled November 2013. Why are these always 2 months old when they show up? Pours a black color, with a nice thicker brown head. Leaves good, thicker full sheets of lace. Earthy hop, and pine in the nose. Some chocolate in the aroma, light roast. A bit of that floral, tea like herbal quality that I presume comes from the lavender. An interesting, and noticeable twist on the black IPA, that takes it in a different, unique direction from the type that I normally like, though itís not really bad, it kind of works. Medium to bigger body, chewier than I remember this being last year, thatís a good thing. Soft carbonation, kind of a slick, sticky texture. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet. A satisfying black IPA... I enjoyed this significantly more than the bottle I tried last year.

On tap at the Bloomington Brewpub. Poured a thick black with a nice thick dark brown head that laced nicely. Aroma had notes of pine hops with some underlying dark malts. Flavor began with a nice dark malt flavor, dark bread and a bit of roasted notes, but the pine notes become the main note towards the finish.
