3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I saw IPA, and expected lots of hoppiness. Instead, I got an opaque black, full headed, big-laced, bitter porter/stout (or whatever you want to call it). Itís refreshing to have a full dark brew that isnít run by coffee nad chocolate. Very drinkable, and a definite re-do.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Aroma of cocoa with some light resiny hops. Appearance is opaque black with light mocha head. Flavor matches the nose, but with a bit more resin. The finish is somewhat dry. Palate is medium, slick and soft. Mediocre for the style.

Iím not sure why this is recommended for the winter season. When I think of Komodo Dragons and Dragon Flyís I think of hot, tropical, and summer. Oh, and the beer tastes great, no doubt about it.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft. At Upland Tap Room in Bloomington, IN. Poured into a pint glass a dark cola like brown color with a tan head. Aroma is not as hoppy I would have thought but roast and licorice. Medium moutfeel. Subtle roast flavors with a fairly strong hoppy bitter bite at the end. Nice lace. Overall, would have liked to have more of a hop presence but drinks easy.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2010 On draft at the brewery. Roasted and citrus nose below a dark brown head. Taste I balanced roast and citrus notes. Nice bitterness and smooth mouthfeel and creamy. Such a really nice beer. One of the best IBAs Iíve had.

12 ounce bottle, bottled in December 2010 so I know itís not exactly fresh. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch frothy tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. At this point, the aroma seems more like a slightly hoppy porter now, not that itís a bad thing. The brew smells like roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some piney hops. The hops do come out a little more in the taste. It tastes like pine hops, roasted and burnt/charred malt, chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel/body is medium, itís a bit sticky with moderate carbonation. I think itís a good brew, although I would like to try a fresher bottle of this in the future. Definitely worth trying, I liked it.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
12oz bottle. Pours a really dark and viscous with a tan head. Dusty dry cocoa, coffee, light nuttiness...not much in the way of hops. Thick mouth feel. Dusty bitter chocolate, inky, some light grassy earthiness in there and then a really bitter finish. Confusing beer.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pour from a 12oz bottle. Inky black brew with small tan head. Aroma is nicely balanced between roasted malts and moderate hops. Taste is like a hopped up but balanced stout or porter. Surprisingly nimble on the tongue and not heavy with either hops or heavy malts, this is a blend of sweet malt, dark roasted malt with bitter coffee and chocolate overtones and well balanced hops at the end that merge perfectly with the bitter malt tones. The lavender in the very finish was a surprise - quite noticeable though I did not identify it till I read the description. Truly a unique brew.
