3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 gabbama (201) - Dayton, Ohio, USA - APR 4, 2013
Pours pitch black with a creamy light brown head. Dark rotated malt aroma with citrus and floral hops. Flavor is almost burnt malt with some hops. The body is thinner than I would have liked, but the finish is nicely long and roasted. Overall, it’s good, but not as good as I expected.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Onslow (922) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - APR 1, 2013
Pour from a 12oz bottle. Inky black brew with small tan head. Aroma is nicely balanced between roasted malts and moderate hops. Taste is like a hopped up but balanced stout or porter. Surprisingly nimble on the tongue and not heavy with either hops or heavy malts, this is a blend of sweet malt, dark roasted malt with bitter coffee and chocolate overtones and well balanced hops at the end that merge perfectly with the bitter malt tones. The lavender in the very finish was a surprise - quite noticeable though I did not identify it till I read the description. Truly a unique brew.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 GMUcrew7 (572) - Mason, Ohio, USA - MAR 31, 2013
Very dark black pour with a very faint light tan head. Strong hop aroma at first but the dark black malts shine through as well. Well balanced flavor, a combination of bitterness from the hops but some coffee bitterness as well from the dark malts. Finishes with a touch of sweetness. Medium body, I really enjoyed this beer. A good mix of dark malts and typical IPA goodness.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 AirForceHops (1846) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - MAR 27, 2013
12 oz. bottle courtesy of Queenholly. Bottle in Nov 2012. Hops are falling off for sure but the brew still turns out really well. More like a stout now in my glass. Nose is chocolate malt dominated with hints of pine. Lots of Earthy herbal hints in this brew with a strong amount of chocolate malt. Burnt roasted malts. After half the glass I had to read the commercial description. Seeing they used lavender makes all the herbal notes make sense. The bitterness is more from the herbal then hoppy. I feel like a broken record. Did I happen to mention that it’s herbal? Still even a slightly old bottle is pretty good.

Sampled at the ’13 Cincy Beerfest. Dark beer with a thin tan head. Dusty grain and hop pellet nose. Flavors of hop resin and pine over sweet caramel and coarse bread. Some roasted grain and burnt toast. The finish has some brunt caramel and grapefruit pith.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 temporrari (373) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - MAR 15, 2013
Really enjoyed this beer. Nice hop aroma, I didn’t get any lavender. The dark malts are pretty mild, and the hops really come through and have a great bitterness. I’m going to have to get more of this brew.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 agent_511 (139) - - MAR 2, 2013
Fresh grapefruit and citrus hop aroma. Tastes of roast coffee, toffee, citrus hops, and pine hops. Medium light body with a mouth filling carbonation.

Really cool to see a black ipa from upland on the shelf for under ten bucks. Not at all what I expected though. Aroma is heavy with roasted malts. Pour is jet black with a medium brown top. Taste is very malty with hints of chocolate and nuts. Palate is average. Overall it’s good but less of an ipa and more of a nut brown.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 alexsdad06 (3040) - Ohio, USA - FEB 23, 2013
12 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark brown to black with a small khaki head. The aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate, a mild nutty note with earthy and strong herbal hops. If I had to pin this down it seems like a spruce/mint combo which is a bit strange. The flavor is very similar, however, the herbal/spruce/mint notes overshadow the roasted malts, nuts and chocolate. Body is a touch thin. This is interesting, but ultimately not something I would drink again.
