COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Continuing our adventure into the realm of sour ale brewing, we designed a recipe to create an Upland version of a traditional Flanders Red. Melding flaked maize into a turbid mash and adding Belgian candi sugar during a long kettle boil, we prepared this ale for epic proportions. We then incorporated wild yeasts and other acetic and lactic acid producing microorganisms for a year-long oak fermentation in bourbon barrels, which had previously been utilized to age beer. The journey was worth the hardships.

Bottle at Savor. Poured medium amber. Picked up a slight hop aroma on the nose. Sourness was mild and in balance with the rest of the rest of the beer. Picked up some fruit notes, remarkably pineapple. Very nice brew. Like a lot of the choices at Savor, I wish it was available locally.

Bottle at FoBAB 9. Seems like these were the first bottles released to the public. Pours a reddish copper with an offwhite head. Quite a nice looking beer, actually. Nose is clean acidity. Tart and some light brett. Faint vanilla notes and a graininess as well. On tasting, really nice and equitable acidity, some cherry notes in the background and just really rounded overall. Like out La Folie used to be. Really a superb Flanders Red.

Not sure how to distinguish the vintage. The back label has a gold stamp saying "Batch Date 9-11" and the cork is stamped " 3-11". Regardless, its the first release. 750ml C+C bottle into a tulip glass. Opens with a loud pop and a very slow rise of foam up the neck. Huge thanks to muskabeatz for BIF’ing me this want! A - Dark red body with an almost brown hue. Tall light khaki head dies down to a neat solid cap. Great lacing and retention. Looks pretty stereo typically Flanders. S - Cherries and oak. Vinegar and soft acetic acid. There is a slight bourbon element happening in the background with some vanilla and char. There is some booze on the nose. T - Lots of great Flanders notes. Soft acetic acid and vinegar followed by sour cherries and some Christmas spices. Light oak and vanilla on the finish with some warming alcohol present. Lingering tartness with a nearly dry end. Smooth and medium mouth feel. O - A nice take on the Flanders style. I was surprised to learn that this was aged in bourbon barrels for a year. The bourbon notes are very tame, but they do mesh well with the softness of the bugs and the tartness of the cherries. Very good wild ale.

(labelled as gilgamesh) pours hazy red-brownish with a creamy light beige head, good retention and lacing spots. red fruits, toasted coconut, tobacco, delicate woodsy and bourbon vanilla notes, nice blend of lactic/acetic (read not too acetic, just perfect in fact). surprisingly never boozy. moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily, very nice grassy-peppery and lightly astringent and acidic finish. awesome ba-concoction again from upland.

Bottle shared at LeviLOL tasting - thanks me! Actually thanks to StFun! Really nice. Light brown pour with a tan head. Bourbon and slightly tart nose. Really nice taste - great balance between barrel character and just a touch of sour. Well done, mellow but lots of character.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, batch date of 9-11 stamped on the back label. Served in a Unibroue tulip, the beer pours a murky reddish/amber color with an inch light tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, it smells like vinegar, tart and sweet cherries, wood, green sour apples, funk and a bit of vanilla. Taste is similar to the aroma. It tastes like tart and sweet cherries, vinegar, lemon peel, funk, wood, vanilla and bourbon. The bourbon flavor isn’t strong in this brew at all, but I think the subtle bourbon taste works well with the tartness. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit syrupy and slick with moderate carbonation. It’s also smooth and easy to drink. I think it’s a pretty nice overall brew. Yeah, it was $24.99 a bottle, but after drinking it I don’t feel like I paid too much for it. Good thing I bought 2 bottles!
