Draft on tap at Great Taste of the Midwest 2011 (Madison, WI). Pours a pitchblack opaque pour, dark and ominous, with a frothy brownish head, decent sized and dies to a thicker film, laces small. Aromas are roasty and cocoa, a lot of bakers chocolate, toffee, and roasted malts. Some coffee, anise, and biscuits. Initial is heavier bodied, a healthy roast and toast, earth and coffee, some ash. Cocoa comes in into the middle with chocolate, dark and sweeter caramel, toffee, and vanilla. Touches of anise, dark fruit. Finish is toffee, roast, and cocoa, dry roasty earthy coffee. Nice.

UPDATED: JUL 30, 2011 (22oz bottle via trade). Pours dark brown with khaki head. Aroma has hard candy, alcohol, hops and dark chocolate. Taste is semi-sweet with loads bitterness. This beer is hot! Medium bodied with slick texture. Dry, bitter finish. Much hoppier than I expected especially since this had some age on it.

Beautiful appearance. Velvet like with a thick frothy head. Honey and chocolate covered cherries that I buy every Christmas is what this beer reminded me of. I loved it. This was quit the surprise.

Bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma has a nice roasted malt with chocolate, cocoa and hints of coffee. The flavor opens with a nice cocoa. Roasted malts, dark chocolate and touches of coffee. Good mouthfeel. This was pretty straight forward, but I like that sometimes.

Bomber. Black body with some mahogany highlights. Frothy, beige head, rapidly diminishing. Dark chocolate dominates the aroma and taste. Aroma also includes notes of roasted malt, alcohol and vanilla along with a hint of earthiness. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter, the bitterness lingering well into the aftertaste. Medium to full body, velvety texture and moderate carbonation. Good balance between chocolate and coffee roast.

Thanks to Juiceisloose for the taste. Pours thick and black. Great big chocolate, bitter and hoppy aroma. Taste is heavy on the bitter chocolate and bitter hops. Lots of things going on, but not quite blending together well.

Thanks to Azurelimits for sharing this bottle. Served in a tulip.
Pours black with a single-finger tan head. This quickly recedes into a thin collar around the edges, though no lacing remains on the glass. The nose brings quite a bit of dark chocolate as well as some roast. A bit of a creamy, milky character in the nose as well. The taste brings some more chocolate and a lot of roast. The feel is quite dry with a roasted finish. It’s also a bit harsh with some bitter astringencies there a well. Oddly, this actually gets less appealing as it warms and I didn’t particularly wish to finish my pour.
