Bottle... Poured jet black with a thin, beige head. Initially I thought this had too much hop bitterness off the bat and distracted from the cocoa characters. After revisit sips I still only got more and more bitterness and the chocolate I was hoping for was struggling to make an impression on my palate. Some roast and malt sweetness. Faint chocolate. Alpha bitterness, resinous. Earthy.

22oz traded bottle about a year old or so. Really nice looking dark, brown pour with a big, foamy brown head. Bold aroma at first but then it mellows under the tall head: light chocolate and roasted malt with a hint of hops. Velvety mouthfeel. Wow, the hop bitterness shows up in the flavor and finish. It almost overpowers the chocolate. A little ABV heat too. Maybe a little our of balance but okay.

Picked this up while in Indianapolis. First Upland beer Iíve tried. Pour is dark brown with a thin khaki head. Flavor is burnt chocolate with some underlying hops and alcohol warmth, but not over the top. Drinkable, sweet balanced by the addition of cocoa nibs. Slight pepper like finish. Enjoyable, yet some what run of the mill for the imperial stout style.

A run of the mill imperial stout this was par for the course from Upland. Other than their lambic series I have yet to find anything particularly outstanding. Thatís not to say they make bad beers; on the contrary they usually fit the style well. It is just if youíve tried some of the lambics the bar has been set very high. If you want an enjoyable stout check it out. If you are expecting greatness go find a bottle of Expedition Stout or Stone RIS.
Aroma / Appearance - The fluid black base and wispy head donít have the same impact as many imperial stouts. In fact it looks a bit like someone tossed a few dust bunnies on top. The nose isnít complex but gets the job done with a mix of anise, smokiness, chocolate, and coffee.
Flavor / Palate - The biggest flaw is way too much carbonation that makes drinking this feel like sips of an alcoholic cola. Once you get past that the profile is solid with a blend of anise, chocolate, iced coffee, raspberries, and other dark fruits leading the charge. The finish leaves a dry feeling without the intensity of the aggressive examples. Would I buy this again? Probably not. However it was a good beer for the price and I did not feel ripped off when I finished it up.

Bottle 2010. Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee aroma. Near black with a small tan head, nice lacing. Sweet chocolate malt, burnt toast, tangy metallic note that seemed at odds with the sweetness. Body is light for the style.

Poured into a snifter. I think this is a 2010, but I am not sure (label torn a bit).
4.0 A: Black color. Two fingers of medium brown, creamy/frothy hybrid head. Retention is pretty good and lots of lacing is left.
3.5 S: Cocoa nibs come through really well and lend a tangy quality to the beer. Moderate roast with notes of coffee, caramel, and peat. The tanginess gives this brew a uniqueness that I havenít really encountered before. I like it. A light booziness, but hidden well overall.
2.0 T: The taste doesnít work as well as the nose. Acrid, charred astringency is too apparent. A certain burntness exists reminiscent of puffing on a fairly cheap cigar or chewing on deeply roasted coffee beans. Caramel and the tanginess of the cocoa nibs manifest in a strange sweet and sour flavor. There isnít enough sweetness to realign the aforementioned flavors to acceptable limits.
3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy, but not particularly smooth. Acrid, burnt aftertaste.
2.0 D: This is a pretty rough beer. It seems like they threw a couple too many sacks of roasted barley into this. I would sit on this for a long time with hopes that some of these flavors diminish.

750ml courtesy of riversideak. Prune infused stale coffee with cocoa, bit of buttery caramel, light cherry, acrid. Roasted coffee/nutty metallic, caramel sweetness. Kind of thin with lively carbonation. Not really working for me with the ashy metallic flavor going on.

Strong chocolatey sweetness, roasted malts, cocoa nibs earthy notes, hop bitterness. Residual sugars. Pours black tan head. The flavor is sweet and full of residual sugars, dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, earthy notes, nice bitterness in the finish. Somewhat herbal and danky. Smooth and dry. Interesting and rather unique imperial stout.

On tap at the GTMW. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is cocoa, coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, toffee and hints of vanilla. Has a little bit of hops in the finish. Medium to heavy bodied and medium carbonation.

Draft on tap at Great Taste of the Midwest 2011 (Madison, WI). Pours a pitchblack opaque pour, dark and ominous, with a frothy brownish head, decent sized and dies to a thicker film, laces small. Aromas are roasty and cocoa, a lot of bakers chocolate, toffee, and roasted malts. Some coffee, anise, and biscuits. Initial is heavier bodied, a healthy roast and toast, earth and coffee, some ash. Cocoa comes in into the middle with chocolate, dark and sweeter caramel, toffee, and vanilla. Touches of anise, dark fruit. Finish is toffee, roast, and cocoa, dry roasty earthy coffee. Nice.
