3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours with a deep amber-red body topped by a thick head with a good amount of lacing. Itís slightly sweet and malty with a touch of caramel and an underlying piney hop note. The aroma is slightly sweeter than the flavor. Medium to full bodied and slightly warming.

Clear mahogany body with thin ringing head. Aroma is caramel, malt, light sweetness. Flavor is sweet, malty candy. Smooth palate.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma is upfront and intense - with loads of sweet malts and ripened fruit. The body seems undercarbed to me - coming off less velvety and more watery. A nice balance of chocolate and deep fruits make up the body. Unfortunately, an odd cherry cough syrup note comes through in the finish and really seems out of place. I am glad Upland is taking risks and making big beers, but the cough syrup finish ruins this for me.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Steve hooked us up with this cool barleywine. Pours a cloudy deep amber and a lasting thin beige head. Aroma really stood out for me with this beer. Intense crysal malts, sweet, light alcohol and a nice balance of citrus hops (pretty much the traditional barleywine smell). Flavor is nice and malty sweet but also fruity, with hints of caramel, molasses and has a nice moderate hop bitterness. Pretty well balanced overall, but the aroma is what did if for me with this beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle acquired in trade (I didnít write down from who, so if you sent this to me, let me know!). Poured a deep mahogany color with a smaller sized off white head. The first whiff gave me a stronger peaty/earthiness to it that faded away. Aromas of caramel, smoke, and dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, dark fruits, and an overall roastiness.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks to hopdog. Pours a lightly hazy reddish brown with a small off white head. Aroma was malty, sweet, some dark fruits and molasses. Flavors of the smae, sensing some of the alcohol. Didnít really fee like a Barley Wine, but was still well done.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Way darker than I expected. Grape, plum, vinousness. Some darker charcoal flavors. No hops per se, but very dry. Really really thin for a barleywine. Dirt. Not bitter in any way. Not complex. Just OK.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
í05-í06 bottle from BBB63, consumed on 3/30/06
First whiff - HEAVY crystal malt. Wow. Color confirms (as does the flavor). Deep garnet, black raspberry body is clear, with a light tan head that is small, even after a vigorous pour.
Crystal and pale malt in the nose, with some cookie dough, but yet a touch of caramel and raisin begs further investigation. Medium sized bubbles rise slowly in the liquid.
Flavor is intense crystal malt, as promised, very hard, though some light chocolate sweetness gives a very light roundness. Low complexity, though some raisins and prunes add sweetness. Fruity, quite attenuated, with a sagging texture as it warms and breathes. Force carbed and quite filtered, it seems. Head disappears to ring rather quickly, with a single ring of lace at the top, left behind. I find additional notes of flat caramel sugars, crystal malt bareness, some light fruits, damp, soily blackish malts producing an almost composty flavor. Slippery, verging on watery, texture, not much substance. Alcohol is well concealed.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2007 12oz - winter 05/06 - Aroma of hops, caramel, alcohol, and vanilla. Pours dark brown with small head and decent lacing. Flavor matches aroma but the hops are very subtle in comparison and a little syrupy. Palate is tart and clean. Not bad, but not great.
Had a 2005 last night and it had faded into a mild tasting version of itís former self. No hops at all and not any better. Should have tried it last year with only one year on it.

Slightly hazy brown. Aroma mixes toffeeish dark malts with slightly herbal notes. Herbal bitterness and malty, toffeeish sweetness contrast. Light spices kick in. Not barleywinish by any stretch, but a pretty good winter warmer.
