COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five is a farmhouse pale ale that was born after enjoying a few small production European brews that use a heavy hand of hops. Ours blends several Mt. Angel grown varieties to create a deep and complex flavor with an underlying earthiness. Pale fruit aromas created during the fermentation brighten the profile and bring the beer balance.
Malts: organic pale,organic caramel
Unmalted: rolled barley
Hops: willamette, liberty, perle
Also: xanthohumol (bottles only)

Slightly hazy gold under a firm foamy lacy white head. Big nose of crusted Parmesan chicken and grassy hops and Belgian hay. Smooth flavor with a subtle but present earthy funk, followed by Belgian blonde malts, a bit of grassy bitterness, and something like plastic (but not in a bad way). It’s quite good and it blends together so nicely that nothing stands out. Took me 10 minutes to write this review.

Bottle, golden pour, very nice looking, tons of white frothy head and lots of lacing from it, which is typical for all of that I have tried from this series. Aroma, light lemon, light lime, somewhat like 7 up, grass, herbs, very interesting. Taste, subtle citrus notes, some light hoppiness, crisp dry finish, nice stuff.

Of the four beers available from Upright Brewing Co. down here in San Diego, the five is the last one I’ve had the pleasure to try. These are a stellar line of beers. And while I remember the Six to be a little humdrum - both times I had it - the Four and especially the Seven were excellent, and really turned my beer lust and attention to Upright’s efforts. And so I have high hopes for the Five, which to all appearances is just as beautiful and epically sculpted as the Seven. Is a lovely amber, with a small, morphing plug of thick foam sealing the beer off from the atmosphere of the room. A light, floral and lightly herbal scent comes off the top of the beer once the head recedes far enough down the glass to release vapors - verbena, oregano, lavender, figs and a spoonful of strawberry jam. This is what Downtown Abbey must smell like, which a richness and elegance that money itself can’t buy. It requires class, too. High class. The flavor reflects the aroma, but with a deeper edge of lemon and verbena in the beginning with a natural, jellied or crystallized fruit flavor in the beginning, and a sudden transition a couple seconds later to a lighter, dandelion flavor, but only the sweet parts, not the bitter bits. This is the taste of Spring, in some unnaturally beautiful, iconic landscape that I can’t describe. Maybe a River Cottage style setting? Its like the flavors of an afternoon of a hammock hooked between two trees next to a quiet brook, or the kinds of flavors Brian Jacques’ worked so assiduously to capture in his Redwall books. Whichever tortured analogy you choose, this is a fantastic beer with a long aftertaste that leaves me reeling, picking apart the flavors, and putting them back together again to experience and re-experience each sip.

Bottle: Copper in color with a monster beige head. Lots of carbonation pushes this above the rim in no time. Nose of citrus and tropical fruits, melon, and light hints of grain. Good florals in the flavor, citrus, and grain. Yeast plays a minor role. Really drinkable, despite the constant head issue with pours.

Bottle. Always enjoy this one. My favorite of the Upright "number series". Slightly underwhelming aroma but solid otherwise. Almost a bit nutty in a weird way. (Maybe that’s just me.) Hops are there but the yeast seems especially expressive. Solid hoppy saison for the money, I’ve definitely picked this one up a few times. One weird note. There’s something in here reminiscent of apple cider vinegar. It’s subtle, but once you taste it... it is there.

Bottle to tulip Fruity esters, pepper, a little barnyard and leaves and finally light yeast. Pours an opaque amber with a huge 4 cm creamy white head that soon reduces to 1 cm with lots of lacing. Taste is a touch of lemon, spruce, pine, a little wood, hay, and grass.
