Four is truly a light yet flavorful beer. The recipe uses a good portion of wheat and incorporates a sour mash into the process to make it slightly tart and extra refreshing. It has delicate aromas and flavors that span a range of floral, grassy and herbal notes. The finish is extra dry and makes the beer a great beverage to pair with food, especially various cheeses and shellfish.
Malts: organic pale, organic wheat, organic munich
Unmalted: rolled wheat

April 12th, 2014 - Another of Upright Brewing’s integer beers, the Four is slight and svelte and sweet. With just the lightest tan, it has more yellow than orange in its hazy body, and a crop of foam to delight and impress the easily amused. Light and wheat, the smell is well suited for a spring day, and appears to be accented with bergamot and freshly zested Meyer lemons. The taste is light and delicate, catching most of my attention with the tangy dimension. A bit later there’s a nice acidity, backed by a dry and wonderfully savory wheat tone that powerfully pushes a fresh cracked wheat flavor. The medium-short aftertaste offers one last dry burst of grain, and then evaporates, prepping me for another welcome sip.

Draft at Slow Boat Tavern in Seattle. Hazy lemon and gold, thick foam. Bright yeasty aroma, very clean, tasty yeast body. Mild banana, good sweet clean saison. Not complex but nice.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a semi-hazy to light transparent semi-burnt orange color to it. A one finger white foamy head dissipated within about thirty seconds leaving some messy lacing sticking and then sliding here and there. The smell started off with some sweet grassy to citrus dryness. Light wheat strains in as it warms. The taste was mainly sweet with a light bitterness sticking in there. Sticky sweet citrusy aftertaste leads into a semi-dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs smooth enough to allow sweet grassy/citrus combination sticking slightly on my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good saison that I would have again.

An okay saison, though not much to separate it from competitors. Light citrus with a nice Belgian spice aroma.

Wheat yellow with large foamy white head. Not much aroma. Light and fruity tasting, almost like a white wine. Sweet and refreshing.

Pours golden, slightly hazy. Huge, huge foamy, pillowy tan head. Not loads of aroma, a bit of grass. Sweet, with some notes of grape soda. Finish is not actually all that dry, contra the deScription. Surprisingly warming for being only 4.5%.

Lots of straw and not a lot of much else. Hazy yellow pour with ok head. Light crisp finish. Papery. Tap at Drake.

Sampled from a bottle, this ale had a hazy straw yellow pour and gave a fluffy, white, lasting cover, there was ample carbonation, streams of carbonation everywhere, it left nice rings and spots of lacing on the glass, the aromas were floral hops that had a touch of spice and citrus, light citrus fruit that resembled lemon, light malt with some bread, little to no funk, a little yeast and powder sugar sweetness, it had flavors of light citrus hops and malt, a little lemon fruit, and a little sweetness, the finish had a light hop bitterness and citrus bite that left the mouth a bit dry, the mouth feel was light and creamy, and there was lively carbonation, this beer had a very nice presentation, the nose and flavor were dim, it was light on the tongue and gave some dryness, I let the glass warm up hoping the nose would get better but there was not a lot here, a disappointing drink, not much fruitiness and hardly any funk, I expected more.

On tap at Borefts Beer Festival 2015 day 2. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a bog, white head. Aroma has grains, elderflower, yeast, bread, slight hops, slight diacetyl. Taste is fresh, dry, light bready. Slightly hop bitter and some sweet, floral stuff. High carbonation and a light body.
