COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Reggae Junkie Gruit was made for the 2009 North American Organic Brewers Festival and is a farmhouse version of a hop-less beer using a variety of herbs and spices in their place. To formulate the recipe we took a trip to the local herb shop and stuck our noses in a whole lot of jars until we settled on lemongrass, hyssop, bitter orange peel and Sichuan peppercorns. We added a bit of spelt to the grist to make this a true adventure for ourselves as we had never used these ingredients. The beer came out wonderfully dry and tart with a tonic-like quality. Expect this invigorating brew to become our spring seasonal in the future.

A hazed golden gruit with a very thin off white head. In aroma, orange pulp and cardamom, with light sulfur notes. In mouth, a light smooth lemon grass tinged gruit, a bit light, lemonade like, but nice. On tap at brewery, Oct. 5 2012.

On tap at Upright tasting room, pours a cloudy blond with a small white head. Aroma of tropical fruits zest, ginger and various exotic spices that I can’t put my finger on. Flavour of exotic spices, followed by the tropical fruit zest and a bit of ginger. Unique array of flavours that sort of works well together. Not the most complex Upright beer, but a cool experiment.

Sour and very herb heavy... Had this at the Sumnmer Festival in Portland 2010.

Slight lemon spiciness with faint juniper aroma. Clear golden pour with a faint head. Slight sourness with lemon like flavors and perhaps citric acid. Light body that finishes softly. A good sour that is not too powerful.

draft. fruity nose has faint resemblance to asian pear and sweet fruit cocktail/pear juice. chewy texture, herbal flavor, lightly medicinal on the back. ginger-ale like at times. some sort of peppercorn and zesty herbal quality. a curious beer.

Oregon Brewers Festival 2010 – Portland, OR Golden in color, lots of aromas, spices - clove, Orange peel and a big malt build this was very tasty. Mild hops and a dry finish. Good beer.

Draught at the brewery. Gold with a small white head that dissipates quickly (no hops, go figure right?). The aroma has a sweet-spicy herbal thing goin on with a little cracked grain. The flavor is pretty much the same with a spicy, sweet herbal tanginess that is hard to pin down but is actually pretty nice. Bitterness is mild, but there is enough to balance the mild sweetness and keep things drinkable. A nice change of pace.

light orange, white fluffy head. Fruit and spice aroma, slightly sweet dried fruit flavor with some interesting spice, a little yeast, finishes nice and easy. Easy drinking fun, I’d drink another gruit.
