Smoked Alt is our annual rauchbier. We flavor the malt using our own smoker, using a new wood and recipe each year while maintaining a German theme. This batch is based on a classic copper colored alt beer that included 220 pounds of malt smoked with oak barrel staves that previously held the Fantasia and Saison du Blodget, two different sour beers. The alt has a gentle nose of oak and apple with light perfume and floral notes, followed by a smooth palate where the smoke takes center stage without being overwhelming. The finish is very soft thanks to the water profile and an authentic yeast strain, and at only 4.5% this is the most drinkable rauchbier we’ve made yet.

Tap at Upright. Pours a clear brown tea color with webby lacing. Nose is nice medium smoke, dark fruits, fresh bark rugbrod. Taste is soap, sugary tea, subtle smoke, red apple. Thin, watery.

On tap at Upright, pours a hazy bronze with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out light smoke, German malts, and some buttery notes. Flavour brings out medium smoke notes above anything else. Never overburdening but nicely smoky. Great stuff.

Wonderful amber body with a baked wood underpinning and decent head. Lovely, nuanced smoked amber malt nose with some light stone fruitiness. The body is astoundingly well balanced with a nice amber malt underpinning, distinct, but well-stated smoky perfume throughout and waves of pronounced mineral fruitiness.

Tap @ 15th Ave. Hophouse... Poured reddish with a thin head. Nice smoked aroma with a hint of campfire and smoked meats. A prominent smoked meat character here with a caramel malt sweetness to back it up and add depth. Toasted grains, smoked fruits, ash-like, herbal notes. Smoked grains all the way from beginning to finish on this one.

Smoky spicy aroma. Brown pour with white head. Flavour is malty with more smoke, but not too much. There is some hop and even a bit of spice in the finish.

On tap at Grain and Gristle in Portland as "Upright Oak Smoked Alt." Very light smoky nose, some tingling, too. Clear dark tea brown color, little head, good lace. Substantial smoke in initial / smoke intensifies, some hop tang, and then some sweet, near candyish, malt notes emerge. Smoke stands out due to light body.

On tap at Upright. Pours a light cloudy brown color with a medium white head. A light nose of smoke and caramel, some fruit. The flavor is toffee, dusty leaves, some light smoke, maybe a hint of oak creeping in. Easy to drink.
