COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Sole Composition release represents the first barleywine made at Upright. Brewed in a deeply malty English style with ashburne mild, golden promise, two medium caramel malts and a touch of roasted wheat for added color, the full bodied beer is balanced by a generous hand of several hops including three experimental varieties. After a healthy fermentation with a classic British yeast, the beer was split into four different local whiskey casks where they mature for nearly four months, picking up tones of milk chocolate, oak and char, spirit, and even deeper caramel.

38 of 115 thanks to Shmeal on TB for the beer Dark mahogany brown with a light tan head that falls to a collar. Good lacing. Nose is caramel, dark fruits, pine, booze, and subtle oak and whisky. Nice nose as the fruits stand out quite well. Taste is mostly caramel, dark fruits and booze again. Slightly hot. Undertones of the barrel which is quite nice . Quite English in style. A bit hot but workable. Thick and rich with low carbonation. Like how the barrel component is very subtle and the base beer stands out well.

Brown pour, tan head. Boozy, caramel, molasses, a bit harsher than the other barrel version of this beer we tried. Still quite tasty, but not as well integrated and maybe I get a hint more oxidation.

750mL bottle sample courtesy of dak, thanks. It pours with a murky deep amber body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up firm spicy oak and then it heads into some smooth booze, big pine hops and slivers of sweet molasses. The taste is full on the palate with smooth sweet molasses and malts and then moving into a mix of pine hops, booze and spicy oak followed by a subtle soft sweet vanilla note. It ends a bit hot but totally in line with a barrel aged barleywine. Solid.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours murky and brown with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The aroma features caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with tingly carbonation. The flavor and finish deliver sweet caramel, vanilla and bourbon warmth. World class treatment of a damn fine beer! Bottle shared by landhoney!

Bottle @ Bobby’s house, shared by GT. Mahogany pour with a small khaki head. Nose is all toffee, toasted walnuts, and chocolate. Vanilla, some caramel, whiskey, and dark fruit. Quite nice. Good sweetness to the flavor. Lots of toffee, caramel, vanilla, and walnuts. Mild booze, whiskey, caramel, oak, and chocolate.

750mL thanks to brainlair! Pours a clear, deep red amber. Thin yellow head with thick lacing. Aroma is a bit cheesy, toffee, mild tomato style bourbon, cheddar. Strange. Taste is sweet tomato bourbon, richer brown alcohol, getting some of that really solid white chocolate mousse flavor of the Eastside BA version. Palate is perfection for style- rich, oily, decadent. Really fantastic.

Tap at Upright, PDX, 25/05/13. Hazed mahogony brown with a thin beige head. Nose carries a good dose of wood, bourbob, sugars, dark toffee and fruit, marshmallows. Taste comprises dark toffee, good bourbon punch, brown sugars, grain, earthy qualities, dark fruit. Full bodied, fine carbonation, bourbon infused finish, dangerously drinkable. A great barley wine ticking all the boxes for the style !

Had this at Where The Wild Beers Are. Pours a hazed brown with a thin white head. Heavy wood and vanilla on the nose, toffee. Caramel, soft tannins, long caramel. Light bourbon and vanilla, soft cocoa, tangy.

UPDATED: APR 24, 2013 Bottle number 66/115 shared by Seth. Cloudy light brown pour with an off white head. Sweet malty aromas. Sweet malt, caramel, and dark fruit notes with mellow whiskey and woody undercurrents. This version had a faint taint like off taste, maybe some early sign of an infection. Good body. Somewhat sweet and hoppy. Good mouthfeel and balance.

On tap at Upright, pours a cloudy dark mahogany with a big tan head. Aroma of dried dark fruits, caramel malts and light barrel qualities. Flavour is very rich, full of caramel, figs and dates (and other such dark fruits), and moderate whiskey barrels. Compared to the Big Bottom version, the whiskey is not as dominant – subtler use of the barrels – feels more balanced. Just like the other version, extremely full-bodied and with awesome use of the barrels, which do not overburden the palate. Slightly inferior to the Big Bottom version. Excellent stuff.
