Cuvee Lactovasilios is a two cask blend made from a Berliner weisse style wort. The brew was fermented directly in several barrels, but this small batch version was done in the ones that previously held the Fantasia, our annual limbic-esque peach beer, and later a round of Five. The fruit originally in the barrel stayed the entire time, becoming a habitat for different yeasts and bacteria, some pitched by us and others coming from the orchard. The fruit also retained some of the Five, which lends this Cuvee a very slight bitterness and hint of saison character. Coupled with the mixed yeast and bacteria barrel fermentation, the finished beer even takes on some Geuze-like qualities and while ready now will certainly mature well for several years.

RBSG 2016 shared at the Grand Tasting after-party in the hotel lobby. Bottle. Slightly darker gold than the non-cuvée Lactovasilios. Tart citrus and light stonefruit character, cleaner and leaner, very nice.

Bottle shared at RBSG. The beer is a hazy yellow with a white head of foam. The aroma has notes of straw, stone fruit, and juicy peach. Some grassy notes as well. Fairly sour. Medium body and medium to high carbonation. Nice stuff.

Bottle at the RBSG Lobby Share. Pours gold with small white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is spice, lemon, oak. Thin, tart lemon, funky, oak, very good.

Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Funky wood and tart lemoN notes. Clear gold. Light funk and a touch of tartness. Nice, light and tart.

750, capped. Pours a hazy, slightly pulpy-looking pale greenish-gold. Loose white head that goes away. Bright lemony nose with soft peach in the background. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Pleasant mix of lemon and peach on the mid palate, not unlike a fruited lemonade. Crisp finish.

Bottle 57/151. Pours a clear golden orange color with a slight white head. Tart cherry, orange, pineapple notes in the nose. Light mouthfeel with very little carb. Subtle flavors, some fruit notes up front followed by florals. Ends with a lingering brett like note. A bit of a disappointment but then again I hold Upright to such a high standard that it may be a little unfair.

From notes. Tasted in December 2012 from a capped 750mL bottle, big thanks to Curtis for sharing. Pours clear golden with a thin white head that completely disappears quickly. The nose is light wheat malt with a nice sour lemon note, simple but nice. The flavor is all about the lactic sourness with the same lemon and very light wheat from the nose. The body is light with average carbonation and a long sour finish.

Bottle: 33/151. Semi-clear, golden body with a foamy, eggshell cap topping it off, quickly receding to a chunky collar. Aroma comprised of faint musty blanket, overripe peach skins, a bit of soured wheat, light oaky tannins, some moderate lactic notes & a good amount of tart stone fruits finishing things off. You get a big woody & oaky flavor right out of the gate, but it’s largely mellow & not astringent or harsh at all. Lots of lactic tartness, grainy & soured wheat, mineral notes, lemon flesh, stone fruits, & a bit of barnyard, cottony must towards the finish with a lingering bit of wild bacteria sourness, dryness, & funk. Crisp, refreshing, & dry. Overall, this makes for a very unique "Berliner". Extremely crushable, easy drinking, & flavorful. Too bad my homebrews have higher bottle counts.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light citrus with a touch of fruit and must. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a small white head that quickly fades to a thin ring around the edges of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of citrus. There is a hint of fruit in the middle. The finish light lemon, funk, and a touch of must. It’s light bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, super refreshing and drinkable. Too bad I’ll never see it again.
