This bottling represents the first time Upright has ever barrel aged the Five. It never struck me as a great candidate for maturation in oak, but after draining the Fantasia barrels it seemed like a good fit to refill them. The aromatics on the Five, both fermentation and hop-based, have pale stone fruit nuances that I knew would work well on top of the otherwise spent peaches still in the barrels. It was a bit of a trial, and only two casks were filled. After several months, the beer started tasting just like I had hoped, so the two were blended and either kegged or bottled for this Sole Composition release.

Had this at the 2014 RB Pittsburgh Summer Gathering at Horny Devel’s place. Actually it was after the equinox at the beginning of fall, but DILLIGAF. Big thanks to James & Michelle for hosting such a nice spread of quality beers and for this particular beer a GIANT thanks goes out to beerman6686. Slight tart nose impressions. Yellowish beer with a slight haze. Slight fine carbonation. Earthy at first with some friendly beer attributes. Then there is a slight bitterness that grows into a pointed sharpness for a finsih.

bottle shared by hoppypocket, thanks bro. pours uclear bright golden with a small creamy off-white cap offering some retention and lacing. sourish peaches and apricots - perhaps, pluots? nah, dill upfront with a very herbal and spicy bouquet, lemongrass and sweet grass, bit of powdery candies, white wine, wood, astringent bitter herbs. average carbonation, light body, bone dry, fairly bitter and astringent herbal-spicy finish. good!

Bottle shared by Hoppypocket, thanks a lot David! Pours a hazy golden with a medium white head that leaves some lacing. Nose is of flowers, really peppery also and carries some pretty blatant dill notes. Taste is fruity, moderately bitter and offers plums and peaches in the flavor department. Body was light to medium, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel juicy. Finish is quite spicy and bitter. Overall this is a nice saison, a bit short of my expectations (where do I get those?) but still really fine!

Bottle (750 ml). Shared by hoppypocket, thanks David! Hazy golden/orange with a small white head and little lacing. Aroma is super juicy with peaches, apricots, nice rustic presence, gentle tartness and subtle barrel notes. Taste is also quite juicy with peach, apricots, rustic notes, nice tartness, barrel notes and moderate bitterness. Light to medium body, but definitely not watery. Soft carbonation. Moderately dry finish. This aroma is impressive and the beer is really tasty while being super easy to drink. It’s hard to believe that the base beer is Upright Five, which was good, but certainly not great. Superb balance! Glad I still have a bottle of this, thanks to Thomas!

In short: A rustic dry Saison of superior quality. A thirst beer of great complexity.
How: Bottle 750ml, consumed with many months of age, bottle from julian, thanks a lot Julian (I still can get over how clever your userid is). Bottle label was Barrel-Aged Five which is an alias to Saison du Blodget.
The look: Cloudy shinning blonde-orange body topped by a persistent small white head leaving some lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose has a nice rustic character, a bouquet of flowers, tart citrus fruits. A bright and clean aroma with no real sign of barrel aging. Pleasant mouthfeel with a medium-full body, slightly chewy and with plenty of tiny bubbles. Taste is sundried hay, semi-dried peaches, lemon zest, flower petals, nectarines, dried straw, dried countryside flowers, apricots. Overall the taste is pleasantly tart, the beer is also very dry with (dusty bretty dryness) and it is also a bit astringent (some tannins at work here). This is a rustic Saison with a drinkability that is only matched by its complexity, a truly kickass beer for the rustic Saison lover. Words can hardly express the pain I feel over the loss of my only bottle of Saison du Blodget, may its filtration and rest in my bladder be as enjoyable

750mL split with GT2 after a mega bike ride. Pours chill hazed orange, lower foam. Nose is explosive funk, bright complex yeast blend, lemon/lime, saltwater taffy, toffee, spiced apple pie. Taste is really refreshing, bright, super light bodied, apple juice, apple pie, raw dough, pie crust. Clean and simple flavor. Quenching. Perfect saison for post workout.

Pour is deep golden amber with a tight white head. Nose has a great oak presence, huge bright peach, and notes of dusty brett. Taste is even brighter, fruits are huge, tropical fruits with a good bit of peach, brett is quite clean and citrusy with notes of leather and dust. Carbonation is strong, body is very delicate and soft. Flavors are extremely juicy and bright.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2014 A fun to drink saison, with some tartness. Not too much oak character. Good drinkability. Pepper aroma. High carbonation. Had ut again a few months later just as good, more tartness.

Thanks Thomas! Golden, with a nice strong tart aroma. White grapes and peach, nicely tart, some barrel evidence. Great stuff
