The brewery recently had the pleasure of producing a special single cask beer for two dear friends - Nathaniel Price, chef de cuisine at Grain and Gristle, and Brent Small who works here as packaging/sanitation technician besides holding down the tasting room Fridays and Saturdays. Both were married in August to Orianna Leopold Newton and Dixie Young, respectively, in beautiful ceremonies near Hood River. This celebratory bottling was made for those special occasions. Starting as a cask of Four in one of the brewery’s most prized barrels, fresh additions of hand picked yellow rose, yarrow, and calendula were added on top of existing citrus fruit that was already in the cask. The result is a bright, botanical saison that we feel is one of our best to date.

Bottle sample at Muckfest V on 7/12/14. Clear yellow in color with a medium white head. Funky and malty nose with some tart citrus notes. Sour citrus flavor with some maltiness and herbal character before a sour finish.

750 ml bottle opened at Muckfest - thanks to whoever brought this! Pours a clouded pale gold with a small white head. Notes of lactic funk, sourdough, pale malts, wheat, oak, grass, straw, lemon, dry grains, mild spice, faint grape - it’s actually pretty restrained on the whole, though. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, lightly funky mouthfeel. Nice, pleasant.

Bottle... Poured pale, hazy, bright yellow with a retaining white head. Pleasant, well carbonated palate, without being overly attenuated. Candied lemong, citrus with mild candied lactic tart tones. Funky and spicy yeast with light esters and grains. Super nice. Great drinking beer.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours hazy and yellow with a small, wispy, white head. Tangy tropical fruits and acidic citrus fruits in the nose. Medium-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and buzzing carbonation. The flavor is fruity, yeasty and moderately tart. Short, crisp, tangy finish that leaves my tongue sandpaper-dry. Thanks goes out to landhoney for procuring and sharing this bottle of world class beer!

Shared by GT @ Richard’s tasting. Hazy golden pour with a white head. Nose is really lactic. Nice tart lemon, apple, orange, and melon. Slight spice, some wheat, white grape, and oak. Really nice. Flavor is light and acidic. Nice tartness. Lemon juice and zest, apple, orange, and unripe melon. Hints of oak, spice, white grape, and grass. Dry finish.

750mL #3/113 thanks to GT2 and Brian. Pours hazy wheat beer color. Can’t see through it. Peach, orange blossom, lemon, baked apple cobbler nose. Taste is more watered down than expected, refreshing apertif like, with lemonade, limeade. Just a tad thin even for saison but this is more of a grisette. Finishes with some acid and something just a bit off but I’m not sure how to describe it. Perhaps green apple tart or green grape skin.

750mL thanks to brainlair! Bottle #3 of 113. <<GUSHER WARNING>>

Pours a full haze, glowing pineapple juice with larger, bright white foam into the Reidel pro stemware. Sharper carbonation, heavy nucleation on the sides of the tulip. No excessive head. Dwindles down relatively quickly. Rings of small lacing. Aroma starts with pina colada- tropical and juicy with hints of impending citric and lactic acidity. Fresh, subtle. Taste is quite light- very juicy and quenching with some marmalade and mild sweet cream butter. Spritzier, bubbly mouthfeel. A bit disappointing compared to the masterpiece of BA Flora Rustica. The yellow rose and components of the greats like Jaune Quatre seem lost here. This is more of a small, table beer compared to those. More of a grisette than a full saison. With that said, the bright and neutral lime acid palate is quite nice. I don’t know if this is the best from Upright, but it is definitely the most delicate and a true model for Grisette.
