COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sure the British introduced the Brown Ale way back in 17th century. It was light brown and sweet, and brewed exclusively with brown malt. Brewer Chad Pieper decided that this was a good foundation, but as Americans do, the style needed to be Americanized. It needed to be roasted, and malty, and it needed to be a little more bitter than the style that was an English second cousin to the mild ale.

Taste test using a pint glass. Aroma: roasted within a smooth hint of earthen thatch. Appearance: brown but darker than a nut, lighter than nota nut w/a thin tan ring of a head and very slowed bubble movements. Taste: I like it. That’s why I drink beer. Palate: Medium with an as mentioned above "flat" carbonation. Overall: Pretty dang tasteful.

Thanks to my cousin. Malty brown brew, pretty much what one would expect. Well balanced and flavorful, leans toward dry for the style.

Can. The brew has tenuous hold on the title "brown ale" -- it’s more crimson than cocoa, with surprising clarity when held to a light. The somewhat thin appearance of the liquid, however, detracts nothing from the tightly woven tan head, which grips the glass in thick, filmy sheets. The beer uses "Patagonian" hops, versions of citrusy American-style hops like Cascade grown and exported by the same Argentinian growers Pages bought from back at Cerveceria Beagle. According to Upslope, the Southern Hemisphere-grown hops have a much more spicy, earthy character than their counterparts cultivated in the Pacific Northwest. These unique hops to shine in the aroma, as notes of pine, chicory and damp forest floor meld with toastier tones of bread crust, bittersweet dark chocolate, and walnut oil. The flavor offers an inclination toward caramel, with additional chocolate notes interacting with a bit of burnt sugar, gleaned from some brown sugar added during the brewing process. This sweetish front and middle eventually give way to medium roast coffee and nuts, and then to a dry, bitter finish both citrusy and earthy, swirling with fresh grass, pine needles and wet bark. Medium-bodied with mild, roasty astringency. My favorite brown ale.

Tasted on 5/24/12 from a can. Pours clear cola brown with an average tan head that leaves average lace. The nose is malty dark bread and cereal with a hint of earthy yeast. The flavor is pretty much the same, nicely roasted, with some coffee. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long roasted lightly bitter finish.

[Can] Nut brown color with a good cap of light brown head. Nose of bready malts, roasted grains and hints of hazelnut. Roasted flavors of dark malts, cocoa, earthy bitterness, bread, hints of patent malts and toffee. Low-medium body. Thin and roasty finish. The flavors are there, wish the palate was better though.

12 oz. can from a 6’er served in a shaker- poured a transparent darkened maroon when held to a light source, 2 finger solid and foamy head formed and laced very nicely upon the vessel. Aroma of nuts and a roasted malt. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt was lightly roasted, some caramel in the middle, finish is long with some pine that comes shinning through. Nice.

Brown, light tan head. Light resin, roasted cereals, grain. Light touch of coffee and chocolate. Fairly bitter, some lighter underlying sweetness. Medium body, quite acidic, fair amount of carbonation, reasonably long finish. Very good.

A superb and fine Brown. Many times, I get too much hops, not enough malts, and some watery action. Not here. Story here is malts, malts, malts all the way. Good, lovely, and recommended.
