3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Can brought to Clockworks 10k tastin - April 19th, 2015. Pours a light golden orange body with thick white foamy head. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with notes of sweet caramel malt, grass and pine hop. Curious to try this one a bit fresher, as the malt character seemed to dominate, however with that being said it wasn’t bad. Well-balanced palate given the high alcohol.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from can into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a deep amber orange color with a thick and billowy white head. The head has an incredible level of retention with it staying for some time. The head very slowly recedes, leaving tons of foamy lace on the sides of the glass and some bubble islands that sit atop the brew for the life of the drink.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite robust of some sweeter tropical fruit aromas with tangerine and mango with other fruity smells of melon and some tangerine. Along with these aromas comes the hoppy smells, with these being a mix of grapefruit as well as some grass. A hint of earthy hop and a little bit of caramel sweetness are there as well, creating a sweeter fruity and moderately hopped aroma overall.
Taste – The taste is a little bit deceiving from what I was expecting from the nose. It began with some of the sweeter fruit flavors that were detected in the nose with flavors of tangerine and mango, these however are rather light in comparison to the smell. The foremost of the tastes at the start is some caramel sweetness as well as a decent showing of a doughy taste. There is also some lighter grapefruit hop tastes upfront, which grow stronger and stronger as the flavor moves onto the end. Along with the grapefruit increasing, some pine and an earthy hop taste also come to the tongue as well. The fruity flavors that were present upfront are largely lost at the end with some of the caramel fading as well. With a little bit of a grassy and slightly boozy taste coming to the tongue at the finish, the doughy flavor takes on a bit of a drier cracker taste, and with the rest of the flavors, it ends up leaving a somewhat drier and moderately hopped warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for the 10 % abv. of the brew with it containing a carbonation level that is rather average to a little bit lighter. The lower body thickness and moderateness of the carbonation are actually quite nice as they match the drier tastes rather well and help minimize the alcohol taste, making this a fairly easy to drink brew even at 10 %.
Overall – While not the most balanced imperial out there, it is a rather decent big IPA overall. It is a fairly robust brew that is well worth a try, all while maintaining a decent level of drinkability.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sample at the Flatiron Park taproom. This beer pours a clear copper color with a medium ivory white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, fruit and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of herbal hops, pineapple and grainy malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a tropical fruit and hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tallboy can. Thanks so much, A! Pours a cloudy dark amber with a dense and creamy white head that fades quickly to nothing. Mild nose of light caramel and orange peel. Creamy medium body, flabby carb. Lightly toasted caramel and orange peels on the mid palate. Not much happening here.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours clear deep gold with one finger of loose white head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, spotty lacing. (4/5) Nose is caramel malt, tropical fruit, pithy citrus, faith hint of resiny pine. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderate to strong bitter. (7/10) Medium body, low carbonation, slightly sticky finish. (3/5)
Tending to the light-bodied and malt-forward, especially for the style. Yes, it’s six weeks past its best before, but as a high ABV DIPA, that should be somewhat less of a concern. The malt-forwardness can perhaps be explained away by the age, fair enough, but it could stand a bit more robustness in the body and in the carbonation as far as I’m concerned. The integration of the high ABV is pretty impressive, though, and is apparent only as a slight alcohol sweetness in the mid-flavour, and an eventual gentle warming on the finish. I’d like to try this fresher, but as it stands it’s a pretty middle of the pack DIPA. (15/20)

This is a great example of what an IIPA should be. Very well balanced with lots of hop but enough malts to really complement it well. Citrus and pine. Love it.

A really nice example. Poured a medium red with a lacy head. Tons of hops in the nose and in the mouth. Alcohol well hidden.
