3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A hazy dark amber beer with a fast dying beige head. The aroma has strong notes of wood, alcohol, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of fruit, and lesser notes of wood, and with the alcohol burning towards the end. The mouthfeel is very thick - like syrup.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler... RBSG2006... Clear copper ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Wonderful aroma releases notes of bourbon, oak, maple syrup, pineapple, vanilla, fuzzy fruit, caramel, mango and honey. Earthy, sweet flavor; light molasses, sour mash, oak and roasted malts. No balance; all alcohol and malty sweetness. Full-bodied and velvety with very light carbonation. Fruity, sweet, bourbony finish. I think this was a sample of Upstreamís new Bourbon Barrel Aged Barley wine, but will hold off until my new friends from Nebraska verify this!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled on 7/15/06 at the RBSG í06 Grand Tasting out of a growler courtesy of Sledge Jr: Pours a transparent copper orange with a thin, wispy ring of off-white head. Aroma of huge viscous sweet sticky honey and caramel malt with a healthy dose of alcohol. Body starts with a big sticky sweet fruity caramel toffee flavor along with some complex dark fruits, vanilla, butterscotch and a smooth, thick malty palate. Has a sticky warming finish but hides the alcohol relatively well.

RBSG 2006 - DC Grand Tasting Lineup
Barrel Aged: Ruby color, light head and lacing. Nose of alcohol, huge sweetness, I think Iím getting the calories just smelling it. The flavor is sweet, "mellony", every kind of sugar and sweet thing ever is in here. Some floral hops. Creamy sweet finish. Low alcohol in the tail. Somewhat balanced.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the downtown brewpub 6/27/06: An orange copper brew. right off the bat, I get a cooked raisin aroma and strong syrupy flavor. I had to laugh because the bartender was really trying to disuade drinkers away from this goodness. Thick and sweet, it obviously isnít for the timid, but I also didnít think it was that over the top, either.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Growler at RBSG 2006. Copper bodied. HUGE nose on this! Malty, sweet, candyish, and almost port-ish. Very Thomas Hardy to me, in the aroma department. Taste is lots of brown sugar, rich malts, big caramel, port or sherry notes, light alcohol, dark fruits and a touch of honey. Body is thick and syrupy. Finishes with more dark fruits, sweet malts, caramel, brown sugar, honey and light alcohol notes. Great stuff!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From growler, 2006 RBSG, provided by Sledge Jr (Thanks Todd!). Pours a very thick and syrupy copper with minimal to no head. Aroma is just a huge malt bomb, thick and syrupy with some alcohol. Flavor is huge with sweet sticky caramel sweetness. Some alcohol, figs, dates, and toffee notes as well. Mouthfeel is very cloying and full bodied with a sticky finish. This really seems to be trying to imitate a young Thomas Hardyís almost. Not quite as complex as the master, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
