COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Upstream Brewing Company’s Red Lager is based on a style of lager developed by brewer Anton Dreher in Vienna Austria in 1841. Its popularity in Europe eventually faded, but Austrian brewers who immigrated to Mexico revived the style in the late 19th century. This beer derives its color and taste from a combination of four different styles of specialty malts that are roasted at a high temperature longer and more slowly than most malted barley. It is deep garnet in color and produces a thick head on pouring. It has a fruity yet low hop aroma to deliver a smooth, delicate palate rich with subtle hints of toffee and light caramel. This is a beer with a very high drinkability.

A deep red style lager similar to a Vienna. A medium body brew with light hop presence and a mellow malt character. Uses two row, Munich, German specialty, and a bit of roasted barley/Carafa malts for deep red color. Saaz and Magnum hops. 10 IBU’s.

On draft with a red pour and a white colored head and decent lacing. Aroma of floral hops and bready grains. Flavor of bready grains, some floral and piney hops. Mouthfeel is moderately to heavily carbonated and it finishes quite dry. Rated as a red lager and nothing Vienna like. A nice full flavored but lightly drinking lager. Would put it in my fridge for an every day brew as an alternate to the regular IPA. Nice one.

[Tap] Ruby red pour and thin beige head. Sweet aroma is mainly toffee and toasted bread. Hazelnut, caramel, sweet grains and dry toffee in the taste. Better than expected mouthfeel, with a rich and creamy palate. Light citrus hop finish. A pretty tasty beer.

(draft 7/30/10). Clear amber color. Medium off white head. Light sweet malt aroma. Moderate toast/malt flavor. Short duration. Very light bitter finish. Slick texture. Soft carbonation. Fair lacing.

A lot better than I expected, since I am not typically a fan of Vienna’s. Surprised me, I guess.

Tasted from growler at beer judging school. Slight almond aroma. Looks like the color of a Well-worn saddle. Drying palate, sweet flavor, roasted malt.

New brew, not the ESB. A really good deep red lager. A brisk and bright lager with a hint of fruit and good hop bitterness that is well balanced. Smooth but a slight grape aftertaste. One of the better efforts at Upstream.

Light, red lager. Sweet after taste. Pretty mild overall flavor. Decent. Could have more than one.

Middle of the road red ale, pours very clear with the right amount of head and carbonation. Malty enough with forgettable hopping. Lighter bodied than many reds and missing anything of substance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
