3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 iowaherkeye (2636) - Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA - OCT 25, 2007750mL corked and caged bottle, Bottled in AUG 2007, Brewed in DEC 2006. 416 of 767. My bottle also says regular IPA and only 6.0%ABV. Hazy orange with a large three finger off-white head, great retention. Plenty of oak and buttery notes up front in this. Immediately after pouring I picked up on a fair amount of burnt plastic, but that seems to get a good deal lighter after a few minutes. Spicy and earthy hops are present, though they seem to have died out during their stay in a barrel for eight months. Flavor is still plenty oaky and buttery with an addition of light sweet caramel. I’m happy to say some bitterness does decide to come out and join me in the finish--somewhere around a 4 out of 10. I was about to say I didn’t really pick up on any more burnt plastic, but then I burped and there it was--burnt plastic and nothing else. As this warms, the barrel really comes forth and actually reminds me of the barrels they used for NG Unplugged quad. Moderate carbonation with a medium body. For a BA IPA, this doesn’t turn out too bad--but I dunno if people should barrel age every style.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Koelschtrinker (8485) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - JUN 4, 2011

Sampled 4/1/2009. Bottle #43 of 621. This IPA pours a medium orange gold color from a 750ml bottle. Large sized white foamy head with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is fruit and sweet, slightly spicy hop with a touch of oak. A medium to full bodied India Pale Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, lots of orange and citrus. The hops are citrusy and floral. More of a British IPA, more as it is more of a malty beer and less hoppy than most US versions. There is just a hint of oak, mostly in the finish. . The barrel aging shows up more in the soft carbonation than in the flavor. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

750ml bottle from sry23 on BA, thanks Scott. Hazy orangish pour with a thin white head. Grassy, somewhat oakey aroma, might be a little past it’s prime, but still smells decent. Has smoothed out quite a bit for an IPA, very drinkable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 heemer77 (5013) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - JAN 7, 2009
Hazy deep bronze orange with a large off white head. The aroma is lightly oaked with some rich orange sherbet. There is also some rose floral character. A grainy taste and mouthfeel is certainly interesting. There is also a quick oak finish after the light orange hints. There is also some light vegetable root. Earthy. I enjoyed this unique beer, but a hophead would probably hate this fairly malty brew.

bottle #4/300. Murky amber with a thick off white head. Aroma was spicy with a bit of funk. Flavor was oak, pepper, hops, tannins, and a bit of a acidic fruit. Finishes lightly tart with a decent bit of hop bitterness as well.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 ChainGangGuy (4122) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - MAY 4, 2008
Appearance: Pours a cloudy, amber body with a medium-sized white head.
Smell: Aroma of ground up fresh oak saplins, fresh garden herbs, and old black pepper with some candyish malts lurking in the background.
Taste: Oak soaked caramel maltiness with a candyish bent. Pinch of herbs and spice. Slight dried apricot fruitiness. A few drops of lemon juice. Medium hop bitterness. A few tannins roll past the tongue. Oaky, bitterish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A dressed up IPA, it’s nice to see beers other than Russian Imperial Stouts and Barleywines getting the oak treatment.
