theisti (1086), Leawood, Kansas, USA Mar 3, 2008 750ml bottle purchased at Beertopia in Omaha, NE. Bottle 327 of 767 - bottled August 2007 brewed December 2006. Pour is hazy orange with a big fluffy white head which was quite lasting. Even 5 minutes later it was a rocky 2 inch head. Really pretty. Eventually (15 minutes later) the haziness mostly cleared. Aroma of musty citrus, pine and the oak woodiness. The smell was quite "cask" smelling. Taste was initially a bunch of the toasty oakiness, with some buttery butterscotch sweetness. The pine appeared in the middle and closed out the finish with some nice earthy bitterness. The oak is again really strong in the aftertaste, where it takes on a buttery chardonnay like complexity. In terms of an IPA, this was probably lacking, but as a general beer, I thought this was excellent. Really interesting experiment, I liked it! CaptainCougar (4664), Rockville, Maryland, USA May 3, 2008 2008, bottle 3/300 thanks to RateandPillage: Pours a slightly hazy golden bronze with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of fresh piny hops and a subtle oaky character. Body starts lightly sweet with good, fresh hop character and oaky balance before a crisp bittersweet finish. A nice use of oak-aging and a good IPA. axilla (942), New Providence, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 30, 2007 courtesy of Hopdog. Poured a cloudy amber colored body with a soapy off-white head. Aroma is dry oak and mild citrus. Flavors are oranges, pine, and vanilla, with a dry, oaky finish. hopdog (4648), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 29, 2007 750ml bottle acquired in trade with valpoaj. Bottle labeled bottle Aug 2007 & Brewed Dec 2006. # 350 of 767. Poured a medium and slightly hazy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of wood, oak, light bourbon, vanilla, tropical fruits, and coconuts. Tastes of wood, oak , vanilla, bourbon , caramel, citrus, pine, and coconuts. Soft and subtle body. Barrel aging well done. This one grew on me more and more as I drank it. ChainGangGuy (1602), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA May 4, 2008 Appearance: Pours a cloudy, amber body with a medium-sized white head.
Smell: Aroma of ground up fresh oak saplins, fresh garden herbs, and old black pepper with some candyish malts lurking in the background.
Taste: Oak soaked caramel maltiness with a candyish bent. Pinch of herbs and spice. Slight dried apricot fruitiness. A few drops of lemon juice. Medium hop bitterness. A few tannins roll past the tongue. Oaky, bitterish finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A dressed up IPA, it’s nice to see beers other than Russian Imperial Stouts and Barleywines getting the oak treatment.
