Wolpertinger, a.k.a. Winged Nut on Acid. Never heard of the rarely seen, Bavarian-indigenous mammal the Wolpertinger? Well, much like the original Wolpertinger, our "Wolpie" is a little Bavarian in nature, scarcely seen and definitely difficult to define...taxonomically speaking. A high ABV, bourbon-barrel aged, chestnut beer fermented with a Bavarian Weissbier yeast strain. ABV: 7.3%, IBU: 35, OG: 18.0

barreled November 2011, drank/purchased May 2013. Poured into brandy sniffer. caramel/bourbon nose... caramel, raisin, smoke. brown caramel color, minimal head. medium sweetness, lightly bitter, the bourbon barrel taste is prevalent, with that late smoke. chestnuts present as well. soft carbonation, long finish, medium body, sticky. It’s an interesting experiment of a beer and pour. A good example of the impact of barrel aging.

On tap at Global Brew. Pours a medium amber/orange with a thin off white head that laces the glass. Fruity, earthy aroma. Sweet caramel malt taste along with dried fruit, nuts and spice. Also has notes of vanilla from the bourbon barrel. Medium hop bitterness. ABV well hidden.

Sample at Great Taste of the Midwest on 08/09/2014: Murky mahogany color with a medium thin light beige head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing. Aroma of malt, nuts and fruit. Medium body with flavors of roasted nuts, dark fruit and malt. The finish is mildly boozy with a nutty and malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

A dark walnut brown color with two fingers of khaki head and good lacing. Sweet aroma with some roasted nuts and dark fruit. Taste is sweet but not cloying with dark fruit and molasses. Nutty flavor is apparent along with some breadiness and a hint of oak. Mouthfeel is full with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Unique rich flavor. Would a great on a cool fall day.

Pours a dark amber that lets just a touch of light through with a thin beige head that leaves average lace. The nose is sour and dusty with plenty of dusty chocolate, and a nicely nutty aroma. The flavor is the same, with a vinegar sourness, plenty of roasted chocolate malt, caramel, a hint of maple, and dusty nuttiness. The body is medium with lively carbonation and a long nutty chocolate and caramel finish. Although obviously infected and not what the brewery intended, this beer is very delicious.

Tiny sample from a 16.7oz bottle, shared by phaleslu. Bottle 72/2011. Mostly hazy brown color. Little off-white head. Some loose bits of lace. Nice vanilla, spice, toasty wood, marzipan. Very light carbonation. Medium to bigger body. Dry texture. Moderate bitter taste. Dry finish. Interesting, tasty stuff.

,5L bottle. Aroma: sweet and sweaty yeastiness, fruit yeastiness, light musk, moderate esters. Bourbon barrel aging melds nicely into the aforementioned elements. The wheat yeast and bourbon come off a bit oud bruin like. Flavor: woody and bourbon fruit esters having an orgy. A bit of musk and light woody burn at the back of the throat. Pretty cool but weird combo going on here.
