Heed these words of advice when you drink this beer - "Be very, very careful lest you be a daft fool!" If you’ve never had a Barley Wine (which is actually a beer) before, then here’s what you should know- This is an intense beerstyle. Stylistically speaking it can range widely; from being fruity to hoppy in aroma and flavor, from being amber to dark brown in color, and from being mildly heavy to downright tractor-beam-pulling in body, but make no mistake, it is always...always high in alcohol. So again "lest you be Daft...please imbibe with care". (Snifter) Stats: ABV 9.2% IBUs 48 OG 21.0 Plato

The appearance is an opaque brown color with a large off-white head. The aroma blends bourbon, toffee, brown sugar, and toasted malts. The taste is quite boozy, mildly sweet, and a touch umami, and the aftertaste is somewhat astringent with booze but still sweet. The palate fuses an oily texture, medium-light body, and a flat carbonation.

Sample at Strong Ale Festival 2014. Comes reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma of fruit, caramel, and alcohol. Taste is sweet fruit, caramel, whiskey, and spice. Nice.

on tap at braukunst live 2014 in munich. took a while to find this stall as it was tucked around the corner. anyways, pours a rusty red with a modest head; aroma of caramel, rum’n’raisin; some coconut flavours and strawberry jam, decent tinny bitterness

(bottle) pours a murky ruby-brown colour with a frothy light beige head. aroma of walnuts, pineapple and caramel, heavily oxidized, with notes of fudge, gooseberries, some light alcohol and strawberries. flavour is mostly the same, again quite oxidized, with lots of alcohol and brown sugar, raisins and a dry finish. slightly thin-bodied with soft carbonation.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours reddish color with a white head. Taste whiskey, earthy, strong. I thought this was so so. I would pass on this next time. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tasted during RBWG 2013. Rich amber brown pour with a small tan head. Rich aroma of molasses, dark fruits, whiskey, spice, and more. Thick, rich flavor with a dose of sweetness, dark fruits, brown sugar, molasses, whiskey, and spice. Tasty!

This was courtesy of Strykzone via a trade. It poured dark red, almost brown with a big tan head and moderate lacing. Nose if strongly of dark ripe fruit and whisky. Medium in body with and alcoholic mouthfeel. Flavor is dominated by the whisky with some ripe fruit and light hops. The finish like the aroma and taste, is still whisky. Could have done without the whisky dominance but still good drinking.

Tap @ Urban Chestnut. Pours a hazy red appearance with a tan head. Sticky molasses, caramel, intense whiskey aroma. The flavor is burning boozy and hard to stomach. Dark fruity, toffee, burning whiskey flavor. Tough to drink.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2013 January 8, 2013 on tap at brewpub. Muddy brown pour with limited head. Caramel, dark fruit and alcohol in aroma. Taste was consistent and nicely balanced. The spice really came out as this warmed up. Super smooth and nicely warming to drink. Wow, I am digging this big time.
