COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A beer we are describing as a ‘Bavarian IPA’. Brewed and dry-hopped with a variety of Hallertau ‘hopfen’… instead of the usual and more citric hop varieties of most American IPA’s… gives this beer a decidedly German twist ABV- 6.2%, IBU’s- 55, OG – 14.5 Plato

Beautiful copper colour. My favorite IPA so far. Usually prefer wheat beers and belgians - this corrects my aversion to IPAs due to many being hopped for the sole purpose of raising IBUs. Wonderful combination of malt and measured bitterness. Absolutely wonderful.

500ml bottle. Hazy, yellow-ish orangey, golden colour with average to huge, thick, frothy, fairly lasting and lacing, white head. Citrusy hoppy aroma with notes of lemon and orange receives support by grassy, peppery-spicy hop notes from the Hallertauer. Taste is moderately bitter hoppy, slightly sweet, juicy, fruity basis with notes of pineapple, orange, lemon, grassy, peppery-spicy hoppy overtones. It doesn’t go without some irony to sit here in Germany, drooling over any supposably flavourful US IPA reachable in order to escape from the boring German pabulum, finding oneself drinking one with "decidedly German twist". But this doesn’t mean being reverberated into Sisyphean circumstances: what we’ve got here is a nice exemplar that shows the splendid usage of a putative second order hop variety adding some well matching spiciness.

Keg @ Urban Chestnut. Hazy gold with a small head. Quite peppery, some baked countryside field. Orange twist. The taste is quite sweet. Peppery herb and caramelized orange. Some honeydew malon. Medium body, soft carbonation.

ARH (371) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 27, 2014
16.9 oz bottle poured into a stemmed Belgian tulip glass. The aromas are very bright tropical, citrus, grass, and pine notes. It pours a murky orange color with a white soapy head that retains well and leaves a good amount of lace. It’s a touch more sweet than bitter, but both are medium-high levels. The oily texture has a soft, creamy carbonation and a full body. It finishes with a dry, tropical, citrus, pine, and grass note. Some pineapple distinctly stands out. It’s a very complex, yet mellow aftertaste that has a pleasant, mellow aftertaste to go with it.

Bottle. Fairly cloudy apricot-colored pour with a massive sudsy head. Looks a lot like a wheat beer in terms of color, clarity and head size. Aromas are lightly spicy with a touch of lemon and honey. Flavor is very interesting and much better than my nose led me to believe. An explosion of lemon and bitter orange dominate the whole thing. Deep underneath the hops blast I can pick up a bit of a grainy texture... almost dusty, but the hops presence washes it away fairly quickly.

On tap @ Urban Chestnut. Hazed golden pour with a white head. Lemon, orange peel, and lots of fresh flowers. A good bready malt base. Flavor has a lot of bread and cracker malt. Lots of orange peel, hints of lemon, and some pine. A strong floral character, which is quite nice.

Taster at the brewpub during RBSG. Totally hazy pale orange color. Off-white head. Leaves good spread of lace. Awesome bigger fresh citrusy zesty light peppery taste. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, crisp lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate bitter taste, light dry finish. Zesty, light spicy peppery. Cool IPA. Well-done, interesting german IPA.

Draft… RBSG 2014… Cloudy peach-colored pour with a mid-sized, wispy, white head. Fantastic retention. The aroma is a collage of herbal, earthy and rooty notes - odd for an IPA. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with tickling carbonation. The flavor is an assortment of bready, biscuity and spicy notes. Very well-balanced. Trends bitter, but only by a hair. Crisp, spicy, herbal finish.

This is cloudy blond and has a white ring of head. It has an exaggerated orange perfume in the nose, almost like they added some coriander--which I presume they did not actually do. This is lightly sweet w/ earthy bitterness. It gets a bit lemony as you drink it and has a bit of cookie dough malt character as well. It is very drinkable w/ light body and vigorous carbonation and finishes crisp and bitter. A lot of adjective IPA styles turn out pretty bad but a Bavarian IPA is a thing worth having.
