UCBC’s Barrel-aged Series - our on-going expedition mostly dedicated to those ever questing ’rye, whiskey, bourbon, etc. barrel-aged beer zealots’. This particular ’aged-one’ is a barley-wine ale that rested for a few months in a rye whiskey barrel, imparting it with some not so subtle notes of spicy rye, oak and sweet caramel. As you enjoy this complex and potent beer, please head these words of advice - "Imbibe with care, lest you be a Daft fool!" Prost!

Acquired in a trade. Enjoyed at fridge temp in a tulip.

A - Pours a murky raisin brown with a 1 finger brown head that fades slowly.

S - I get dark fruits, plums, raisins and figs. Lots of cane syrup / molasses. Hint of rye and bourbon.

T - Impressive! VERY sweet and fruity up front like prune juice. The middle is this intense flavor of vanilla and sweet fruits like apples and mango. The finish is charred oak, vanilla and bourbon. Boozy sweet lingering taste that lasts a while.

M - Heavy body, mild carbonation. Chest burn from the alcohol.

O - This beer is pretty incredible. An excellent balance throughout. It’s certainly a sipper. Very enjoyable!!!! Looking forward to letting it warm up a bit.

This is a seriously tasty beer. It has an iced tea honey whiskey aroma and murky dark brown color. The flavor is light on the whiskey with hints of coffee and brown sugar. You have to try it.

Bottle @ home, via the rot box, thanks to jcnielsen for sending a while back. Pours a hazy, dark orangish brown appearance with a brown head. Spicy oak, vanilla, heavy coconut, caramel, and spices in the nose. Barrel forward flavor. A bit heavy on the booze. High sweetness and moderate sweetness. Lots of coconut and brown sugar in the flavor. Finishes a little boozy. Solid, chill beer.

Bottle shared by Ben. Pours murky dark amber with creamy off-white head. Aroma is cereal and bready malts, mixed berries, floral notes, light alcohol spice, and light toast. Flavor is sweet bready malts forward with berry esters, light bitterness, alcohol spice, and faint toast; smooth throughout with a semisweet finish. Full body and low carbonation.

Bottle 226 of 3000. Pours a murky brownish red. Nose and taste are fig, plum, rye, oak, leather. Nicely balanced, not overly aggressive, should keep holding up fine for years to come. Wish I had another.

Bottle shared with me by Savnac: Poured a brown with orange hints, the head was tan. Aroma was strong alcohol with vanilla and caramel. Taste was similar with sticky caramel, strong alcohol and notes of vanilla. Finish was lively spice and sticky.

Sample from a 16.7oz bottle, bottle 150/3000, shared by phaleslu. Totally hazy brown / red color. Thin off-white head. Little loose bits of lace. Really interesting rye whiskey aroma. Some apple, light spice, light toasty malt aromas. Little dark fruit. Bigger body. Very light carbonation. Dry texture. Good light sweet taste, little warmth in the finish, but minimal bite. Tasty stuff. Nice long rye whiskey aftertaste.
