3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 RobertDale (1900) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - APR 2, 2013
On tap at the brewpub. Comes reddish brown with a nice biege head. Aroma of malt, yeast, and fruit. Taste is malt, nuts, yeast, and fruit. A bit different, but enjoyable.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3977) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 17, 2013
Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 beers this beer poured an orange-caramel color with a medium sized foamy beige head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was faint and dryish with touches of walnut and wood. The flavor was dry and woody with notes of walnut, faint smoke, a bit of turpentine and an off medicinal presence. Long finish of turpentine and walnut. Medium body though a bit undercarbonated. Not good.
2.4 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 ChiefP (4) - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - FEB 2, 2013 does not count
I had this on tap at a restaurant, so I thought I’d try it in the bottle tonight. No surprise that the tap was much better. The aroma is rather empty, but it’s a beautiful pour. The taste is is a balanced malt & bitter blend. The first ish is dry, with a unique, but pleasant taste from perhaps the chestnuts. Not sure if I’ll buy another bottle, but on tap I may try another.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 jcnielsen (840) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - JAN 30, 2013
On tap at Urban Chestnut on Jan 11th. Pours a hazy brownish-orange with white head. Nutty, wood, soil flavors. Hmm, not sure what is going on with beer.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ernest (5627) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 18, 2013
Bottle.
Head is initially large, fizzy/frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain/nuts, caramel), lightly yeasty (basement), with a strong note of banana, other notes of spoiling fruit and vinyl/linoleum.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly unclean.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Kind of a weird beer...it’s almost like the banana note (which is by far the most prominent aroma) is added rather than yeast-created...like a nondescript ale flavored with banana. A little dirty/off (similar plastic odor as in the zwickel), but not terrible. The chestnuts don’t seem to make much of an impact. Not a fan of this one...it’s a bit unpleasant to be perfectly frank.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 diefledermaus (7) - Illinois, USA - JAN 10, 2013 does not count
Lovely amalgamation of styles. Not really a brown ale or a weissen. The chestnuts add earthy, nutty complexities that partner well with the phenolic yeast. Wonderful from the tap at UCBC. Would have rated higher in the bottle i’m drinking of it now tasted as good.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 adnielsen (6200) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JAN 9, 2013
Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson! Pours a hazy, dark orange appearance with a cream colored head. Slight DMS, cooked veggie, nutty, roasted malty, lightly phenolic aroma. Tangy, burnt roasted malty, nutty, tangy, strangely sweet flavor with a fair earthy/herbal element also going on. Maybe it would have been better fresh?
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ryanfolty (1457) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 8, 2013
January 8, 2013 on tap at brewpub. Cloudy orangish brown pour with limited head. Yeast, malt and nutty in aroma. Finish and aftertaste really highlight the nutty flavor, little bit of bitterness in there as well.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 NobleSquirrel (3286) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 7, 2013
Bottle from Randal’s. Pours a cloudy brownish orange with a billowy head. Nose is odd. Earthy and meaty, cloves and super estery. Faint nuts. On tasting, it’s a little bit harsh, faint solventy. Cloves and spice. Earthy finish with nuts. A bit sloppy and lacks the overally rich and creamy qualities of a great weizen. Meh.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 3fourths (6950) - Straßgiech, Bavaria, GERMANY - DEC 31, 2012
fresh bottle. unfiltered. cloudy dark amber body with a fine off-white head. ester-heavy nose of browned bananas, dark bread and tropical fruits with both hops and malt sweet and juicy. the chestnuts aren’t present much in the aroma; if they are they’re mixed in well-enough to be indistinct with all the nuttiness and toastiness going on from the barley and wheat. in flavor it’s more present, most noticeable as a sudden saccharine twang on the approach with equally confusing oiliness, also showing up in the finish after a very German frothiness explores and washes across the tongue with an acidic bite and traces of solvent roughness. other than that, and the chestnut nutrisweet moment, it’s quite nice, especially the texture. the core is very Bavarian.
