COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Reverence Series #1: Our first beer in our Reverence series of traditional European-style beers, is a sessionable German lager known as a Zwickelbier - a very old ’classic’ with a heritage traced back to the Middle Ages. Zwickel, pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’, is unfiltered, unpasteurized and finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy beer. Hops: Hallertau Malts: Two-Row Pilsner. Target stats (final stats TBD): 19 IBU, 4.8% ABV, 11.8 Original Gravity

Bottle. Lactic barley malt and hay aroma. Hazy medium yellow with giant white head. Mildly sweet lemon barley malt and moderately bitter herbal/hay flavor. Pretty good.

Which I could sit down with a session of this. Where it stands it is a good lager and one of the few in the style in the US.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (grain/cracker, husks), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of DMS, linoleum, and detergent. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean, husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Seems like maybe some promise lies under the covers, but the clunky/industrial flaws are prominent and difficult to ignore (in both nose and mouth). A drain pour, but at least the brewer’s heart was in the right place.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2011 Draft at the brewpub served in one of their steins (Wasandis is also served in this), so I didn’t get a great look at the color looked like a slightly cloudy yellow-gold, and there was an uneven white head. Aroma of grassy hops, straw, butter, bready and pale malts, and yeast. Flavor followed suit for the most part, getting sweeter, maltier, and more buttery as it went down and warmed. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a grainy, malty mouthfeel. Don’t know a whole lot about this style but it was nice and easy to drink. RE-RATE: Had it again at The Royale. This is still not a style I know much about but this is a great, sessionable beer. I’d like to try more Z/K/Ls for comparison because I don’t think they’d beat this.

500 ml can. Pours a cloudy orange color with a small white head. A light nose of dough some light fruit. The flavor is crisp, light hops, big bready dough, some caramel, yeasty. Very good. Crisp and flavorful. I could drink a ton of this.

Draft at the brewpub, served in a real German steinkrug. Looks to be dark golden colored with just a little bit of head. But this beer brings me right back to the German countryside. Bready malt with a neat bitter finish, I long for a pretzel or brat and brotchen. May not impress those look for audacity, but this is solid classic beer and my favorite of the day. (16.7oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) clear medium gold, wispy white bubbles. Nose of light sweet butter cream, cream corn, oats, toasty, very light on the hops, but german hops for what is there. Taste is light melba toast, light butter, oats, smooth, medium sweetness, almost imperceptible hops.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2013 Lightly hazy golden color with a medium sized, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malts, citrus, grains, toffee, and grass. Taste of toast, grains, toffee, grass, light citrus, and medium bitterness.

Draft at Capones with Pat and Dallas. Pours a clear yellow body with light white lacing. Aroma is wheat and German lager tones. Mouthfeel is thin and light - somewhat refreshing, but a bit dull - notes of pilsner malts, dry hops, bland German Wheat.
