Reverence Series #1: Our first beer in our Reverence series of traditional European-style beers, is a sessionable German lager known as a Zwickelbier - a very old ’classic’ with a heritage traced back to the Middle Ages. Zwickel, pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’, is unfiltered, unpasteurized and finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy beer. Hops: Hallertau Malts: Two-Row Pilsner. Target stats (final stats TBD): 19 IBU, 4.8% ABV, 11.8 Original Gravity

January 8, 2013 on tap at brewpub. Cloudy yellow pour with limited head. Aroma was grainy, yeast and malt. Taste was consistent with aroma with mild bitter finish. Very drinkable and good for style.

Bottle. Hazy straw gold pour, big white head. Good retention/lace. Aroma of grassy hops, dough, lager yeast. Taste is sweet bready malts, spicy noble hops, yeasty, fruity. Palate is dry, crisp, bitter finish. Very nice.

Another beer shared by Stan Hieronymus. Still geeked out. The beer had a rich translucent gold body with a film of white head. The aroma was herbal with some wildflowers; had a pastoral feel. There’s also a touch of white grape and maybe pear. The flavor brings much of the same; seems very traditional. The palate isn’t quite as soft as the Hefe, but is still soft and creamy overall. Would really love to try this in person someday. Thanks again, Stan!

Pours a light hazy yellow color with a monster, white bubbly head and a lot of carbonation. Aroma has a modest grassy, lemon nose from the hallertau, light pilsner nose, some light yeast character as well. Flavor has a smooth grassy, lemon start with a light amount of bitterness which fades to a very nice pilsner grainy finish. Body is light, very fizzy and slightly sharp feeling from the high carbonation. Overall a very tasty brew. Wish it was an everyday beer as I enjoy the full flavor for such a light beer.

Sampled at the St Louis Brewer’s Heritage Festival. Slightly cloudy pale yellow with very little white head. Bready aroma. This is a sweet pale pils, smooth and easy drinking for summer. Quite good.

A gorgeous, rustic, grassy-hoppy bitch of a lager. Dry, refreshing, plenty of spicy hop character, and an honest, grainy backbone. Right in my wheelhouse.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2012 Thanks, Carter! Tasted on tap into shaker pint. Poured a cloudy golden color, persistent white head with some lace and lots of suspended yeast. Aromas of rising dough, fresh-baked white bread, graham crackers, black pepper, grass, leaves. Chalky, yeasty, grainy, lightly fruity, subtly spicy, pils-like, mild and balanced bittersweet. Light body, moderate carbonation, bready mouthfeel, crisp and refreshing lager finish. Delicious. I love this kind of thing, and can’t wait until it’s available in bottles (any day now.) I think The Stable’s Zoigl was a little better but they’re out-of-business now, so that was obviously a minority opinion.
