2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
April 4th, 2014 - URBN St.’s brewing operations are being pruned back as of the writing of this review (February, 2016), but back in 2014 they had a pretty commanding presence in the North Park area, with their URBN Pizzeria occupying a commanding spot near-ish 30th and University. And that’s where I had there basic IPA, relaxing with friends and people watching from the large vistas facing North and East. The difference is acute. On the main street facing side is the circus pageantry, and on the East, families and tired looking individuals limping back to their homes and apartments in the adjacent neighborhood. What I mean to say is this all added desperately needed spice to an otherwise plain IPA. The aroma had enough hops and pine scents to occupy the olfactory, but the generic sweetness left little to rave about. It is well enough to smell, but I don’t find much of it engaging. Even more boring is the flavor, which is neither bitter nor sweet, with a light carbonation. It’s maltier than anything else, and even that taste is unidimensional. Maybe, in the intervening year and a half the IPA recipe has been pushed in bolder directions, but I suspect not - this is a beer tuned to hanging out at a bar and eating with pizza, with just enough to coat the palate, but not enough character to engage it.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at URBN in El Cajon. Pours clear yellow/orange with white head. Nose is citrus, grass, malt. Flavor is more bitter with sweetness just up front; bready and hoppy, bitter finish. Good but not stellar.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap @ Plan 9 Ale House. Orange pour with a white head. Bready malt nose with some orange, straw, and grass. A touch of peach, some apple, and a slight dusty note to it. Kind of funky. Flavor is mostly sweet and malt forward. Lots of bread and toast. Sweet orange, light bitterness of grass and citrus peel, and some apple must. There’s a light cheese and dust note to it. Not great.
