500ml Can (Thanks Omhper) - Dark brown, almost black, with a foamy tan head. Chocolate, metal, roasted malt and some smoky hints in the aroma. Smoky and malty taste with notes of plain chocolate, coffee and beech detected. Not bad and better than I was expecting.

As a general rule Romania produces some very average pale beers (called BERE BLONDA here). However in every country you sometimes find some real gems. I have read on this site rave reviews about URSUS BLACK and no surprise, it is a lovely dark beer with a really deep rich flavor. If you test it alongside its rival SILVA BLACK you will find URSUS BLACK to be in a different league! Its a funny thing out here in Romania that BLACK/BROWN beers are much more popular with women than men (proving once again that they are smarter than us!).

In short: A sweet and sticky burgundy beer with liquorice and dark fruits flavors
How: Tap and bottle a few times in Transylvania/Romania
The look: Clear dark burgundy topped by a persistent small beige head
In long: Nose is black liquorice soft candy, bran muffin, notes of fresh tobacco. Taste is more of the same. Liquorice soft candies, black jelly beans, residual sugars, caramel, dates, figs, cookies. Medium body and medium carbonation. This beer is actually not all that bad beer when fresh on tap, however the beer has an oily sweet flavor that I just cannot drink in quantity, it therefore loses points for low drinkability. To give you an idea of the Romanian beer scene, this Ursus Black is currently the highest rated Romanian beer on with a current weighted average of 3.23 and an overall score of 74. So you can imagine the shit I was drinking in the weeks I spent there. On the positive side, my decision to spend my 2011 vacation in Romania was met by cheers and applause by every other nation on the planet.

Clear dark brown beer, creamy beige head, unstable, adhesive. Aroma: sweet caramel, some dried fruits, very ripe to rotten fruits. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet caramel, mocha, bit of red berries. Aftertaste: mocha, coffee, brown sugar. A bit sweet, but not bad at all!

19/08 0.5 l bottle at Timisoreana brewery restaurant. It poured dark brown to black body with medium to big head. Coffee, some roasted caramel, slightly herbal hoppy in aroma. Flavor is coffee driven, orange, grass, fine caramel notes. Some good quality malt used here surprisingly, and it’s not thin at all, though it had shorter, fruity sweet finish. Interesting and much better than expected on the place. And it’s a schwarzbier, not dunkel.
