Draught at Berăria Ursus, Cluj, Romania, March 2013. Black with a quick dissolving tan head that leaves a ring. Sweet aroma - plum, marmalade, raisins, very faint roastiness. Tastes slightly fruity and very, VERY buttery - WTF?!?! Medium body, smooth texture, long, sweet and a little roasty finish. 7/3/5/3/8=2.6

Bottle in Bucharest. Pours black with brown/tan head. Caramel flavours with the dry stout-like bitterness. Something like a porter and none the worse for that. Recommended

0,5 l can as a gift.
Deep brown near black one with a froathy medium tan-light beige head. Aroma of sourish yeasts, some burnt wood and roasted grains, liquerice, caramel. Medium bodied one with some roasted grains, moderated ash and burnt wood, sourish yeast. Not bad - not good.

Dark brown with a thin head. Malt-forward aroma is clean molasses and caramel. Rich caramel, more like a Baltic porter than anything else, but not quite that either. Finishes sweet with earthy liquorice notes. The only serious go-to beer in Romania.

Canned. Clear deep dark brown/ruby in colour with a creamy beige head. Cara-malty nose and aroma escorted by bread and mild chocolate underpainted by roasted malt. Some fruity accents appearing, too. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Sweetbitter and gently warming finish with coffee and breadcrumb. Nice, enjoyable.

50cl bottle in Sighisoara, northern Romania. I can see that the exotica politica could give this beer a leg up and it is by no means poor, but its dark allure seems to me to come more from molasses than skillfully blended darker malts. Plain and nice but not the top quartile in my view. And schwarzbier is a bit of a cop-out as the connections in this part of the world are with Scandinavia, so bokking it up a bit might bring more authenticity.
