COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Bottle in Brasov. Black with a large brown head. Smell of coffee, burnt malt and chocolate. The flavor contained the same as the aroma, plus a decent bitterness. Not bad at all for being a Romanian beer.

500 ml can. Pours thin and black, with decent tan head. Aroma and taste are roasted malt and hint of chocolate. Very light body for a stout. Enjoyable though!

In short: A sweet and sticky burgundy beer with liquorice and dark fruits flavors
How: Tap and bottle a few times in Transylvania/Romania
The look: Clear dark burgundy topped by a persistent small beige head
In long: Nose is black liquorice soft candy, bran muffin, notes of fresh tobacco. Taste is more of the same. Liquorice soft candies, black jelly beans, residual sugars, caramel, dates, figs, cookies. Medium body and medium carbonation. This beer is actually not all that bad beer when fresh on tap, however the beer has an oily sweet flavor that I just cannot drink in quantity, it therefore loses points for low drinkability. To give you an idea of the Romanian beer scene, this Ursus Black is currently the highest rated Romanian beer on with a current weighted average of 3.23 and an overall score of 74. So you can imagine the shit I was drinking in the weeks I spent there. On the positive side, my decision to spend my 2011 vacation in Romania was met by cheers and applause by every other nation on the planet.

Can 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a clear orangey brown with a dense and creamy beige head. Odd farty aroma initially, then some sweet roast. Medium body, subtle roast, and some licorice, roasty finish. Quite decent. 230512

UPDATED: AUG 1, 2012 clear brown, smooth light brown head. mild malty aroma, dry. flavor is pretty messy mix of bitter malts, bitter caramel, plastic and a slightly tart sour note. also tried a bottle and that one was a lot clearer in the flavor. no plastic, no tart sour note, but perhaps a roastiness that could be interpreted as almost sourish/tartish. flavor 4->6, overall 8->13

This beer was brought to me from a co-worker returning from a trip to Romania. First and foremost thank you Delia for taking the effort of buying this beer and traveling with it half way across the world so I can try it. The Aroma was evident went I was decanting it from the can. I picked up bread, charcoal and spicy aromas with slight hints of fruit. The beer had a off white to a light brown frothy head that diminished leaving a small amount of tracing. The color was clear black that wasn’t transparent. Initial sip started out kind of sweet. Then a little sour. Finished with a heavy bread flavor with somewhat of a harsh and aftertaste. The palate was light with an oily texture and soft carbonation. I originally gave it an 11 out of 20 overall score. I’m going to change it to 12 because it came out of a can instead of on tap or out of a bottle and it traveled on a long journey.

Draught at Berăria Ursus, Cluj, Romania, March 2013. Black with a quick dissolving tan head that leaves a ring. Sweet aroma - plum, marmalade, raisins, very faint roastiness. Tastes slightly fruity and very, VERY buttery - WTF?!?! Medium body, smooth texture, long, sweet and a little roasty finish. 7/3/5/3/8=2.6
Draught at Caru cu Bere, Bucharest, April 2013. Malty, caramel, bittersweet chocolate aroma, roasty, sweet chocolate taste. 7/3//7/3/14

Small dark-cream head over totally deep-dark amber beer. Very demure nose with dark malts, and something lactic. There’s another aroma, that reveals itself in the mouth as green apple. Main taste is sweet-neutral. All in all a pretty dim stout, but there’s worse around.

Draught at The Gin Factory, Bucharest. Near black, brief head. Roasty coffee aroma. Sweet with some syrup and caramel, above medium bodied with clean mouthfeel. Syrup and coffee dominates. Fairly low bitterness. Akin to a roastier Dreher Bak.
